  4. Meaning Counseling process whereby a trained, competent counselor will help or assist an individual who is seeking help in gaining greater understanding of self, improved decision making and behavior change, to overcome his or her problems.

  5. Definition • Career counseling is concerned with the future goals of the individual and whether these goals are seen realistic by the management. The role of the manager is to listen, amplify, explore and generally assist the employee in thinking through his/her short and long term goals. Good counseling, like good performance coaching, is built on relationship of trust and open communication and is a key responsibility of every manager.

Benefits of counseling • Decrease the cost of absenteeism or turnover • Improvement in performance • Helps the superior decision making • Helps to understand the situation more objectively or with new perspective • Helps the employee to become more innovative • Helps to develop alternatives to solve the problem

  7. When it is needed? • Unrealistic targets • Excessive workload • Absenteeism and late coming • Performance issue • Relationship issue • Not meeting the deadline

HR role in counseling • Need for counseling can be identified by HR as well as supervisor • HR discusses the issue with the relevant supervisor and ask for feedback • Discuss and agree a plan of action • Schedule and jointly conduct the counseling session • Conclude the counseling session • Monitor the and review the development plan periodically or as per the need • Follow up and Termination

  13. Managing feelings Prakash, 45, is a section officer, recently separated from his wife. As a consequence the event, Prakash is emotionally disturbed. Around this time, Prakash found himself becoming increasingly emotionally and sexually attracted to Jamuna who is working in the same office. Jamuna also sent a signals that she is also interested to him. Prakash realized that as a young officer he needed to manage his feelings of vulnerability , loneliness, and sexual attraction without involving Jamuna. Since his partner died of cancer one year previously, he had been working even longer hours. He was 50 years old, and had aging mother to support.
