Four Goals • Pleasure, seek it intelligently-short vs. Long range results • Worldly success, wealth, fame & power • Social, relationships • Earthly gains, greed • Joy, the opposite of boredom and frustration • If the EGO had no expectations there would be no pain • Beyond self • In as much as you do to the least of these you do to me • Attachment to the whole of creation

Religion, Sacred writings Vedas, Upanishads - sutras • Sanskrit - ancient Indo-Aryan (noble) language • From poly theism to monist God • Time, cyclic • Four ages, 4000,3000,2000, 1000, years preceded by dawn and twilight, 12,000 years the world decreases in morality and religion then is recreated • Equals one age 1000 ages equal a day of Brahma the creator

Dharma- that which holds • The entire creation is held together and sustained by the All-powerful Laws of God. • Practice of Dharma, therefore, means recognition of this Law and abidance by it. • Dharma is the principle of righteousness. It is the principle of holiness. It is also the principle of unity

  13. There Is a Difference Between Chronological Age and Psychological Age • The aim of life is to pass beyond imperfection. • This cannot happen in one 70 year life span.

Four Ashrams – phases to living • In Vedic times, human life was regarded as eighty-four years, consisting of four sections of twenty-one years each. • Youth/learning - discipline, guidance • Householder - have children/family, working and fulfilling duties to society • Hermitage - contemplation and for guiding society • Isolation - elder full of wisdom, renounce all the outer goals of life, teacher of the spiritual knowledge and no longer partakes in social or political concerns

  17. Buddha never preached a belief in god • Rejects ritualistic aspects of the Vedas, but does not deny the higher teachings of the Upanishads. Rejects caste system. • Believes in theory of karma and rebirth, but holds that an atman (individual spirit) does not transmigrate from one birth to another. • Holds that Self and World are both illusions • Four Noble Truths, the Twelve Causes, the Three Seals of the Dharma, the Eightfold Path, and the Six Perfections

  39. Ojas can be depleted through mental and physical factors. • Emotional; anger, fear, sorrow and worry • physical ; loss of nourishment, intake of unsuitable foods, old age and excessive physical activity

  40. Physical States: • Excess Vata -dry skin, constipation, insomnia • Excess Pitta - heart burn, acne, ulcers • Excess Kapha -obesity, respiratory congestion

  41. Causes of Disease • Loss of faith in the Devine • When we do not see god in all things including themselves we create a gap • The gap results in longing and suffering spiritual, mental then physical. • External aspects of health include • Time of day, seasons, diet, karma, and lifestyle

Illness • All causative factors of disease internal or external directly or indirectly create an imbalance [ increase or decrease ] in these doshas first and only then do the symptoms of the disease manifest. The causative factors can be the food, life style or other activities. All these factors are affecting one, two or all the three doshas.

  43. Imbalance in Emotional States • Excessive: caused by • Vata humor - excessive fears and anxieties • Pitta dosha - anger and aggression • Kapha humor- emotional clinging or possessiveness and general lethargic attitudes
