Hinduism Birth Rites Every Hindu couple is responsible for passing on the religion by having children Punsavana is preformed in the 3rd month of pregnancy for the fetus strength Simantonnyana is preformed in the 7th month of pregnancy Prayers for the child's mental development It is believed that the mental state of the mother effects that of the baby Jatakarma is preformed when the baby is born Honey is put in the babies mouth The name of God is whispered in the babies ear There are also ceremonies for the naming of the baby, their first trip out, first taste of solid food, ear piercing, and first haircut.

Buddhism The Buddha Buddha means “awakened one” Siddhartha Gautama is the Buddha Born in 580 BCE around Lumbini in present-day Nepal He thought he would not have to experience death or sickness, but one day after seeing an old man, a sick man, and a corpse, he realized that death was inescapable. He took this as a sign to be a homeless holy man. He was trying to find answers of how to avoid death. Encouraged to follow a life of discipline. Even though he practiced meditation he still could not escape the world of suffering.

The Buddha Continued… • He then abandoned a life of self denial and lived a life of midway luxury. • One day sitting under the Bodhi tree he achieved Enlightenment and became Buddha • Buddha set in motion the idea of Wheel of Teaching, rather then worshipping one god or gods, it center around teaching. • Buddha taught for 45 years of his life and taughArahants his disciples, who attained Enlightenment for themselves.

  6. Sacred Mandala Mandala is a symbolic picture of the universe, they are paintings created by colored snd on a table. Represents an imaginary place to think about during meditation The creation of mandalas transmits positive energy into the universe; they purify and heal Each different design teaches a different lesson The design is first marked off with chalk on a wooden platform Start from the center and work outward, using metal funnels. The sand is from ground marble or gems

  7. Sacred Mandala continued… • Once the mandala is complete • There is a healing ceremony • One monk begins ruining the mandala by scraping a knuckle through the sand • A second monk takes a paint brush and sweeps the sand towards the center • The destruction is to remember the impermanence of life • The colored sand is swept into an urn and poured into flowing water.
