  2. A fact is a statement that can be proven.

  3. An opinion is a statement that tells what someone thinks or believes.

  4. An opinion cannot be proven.

  5. Words such as best, worst, good and bad are often used when giving opinions.

  6. Now let’s read a story together and practice what we’ve learned.

  7. Read each sentence and tell whether it is a fact or an opinion.

  8. The underlined phrases are hints to help you.

  9. My family and I moved out West in the spring of 1849.

  10. We settled in a tent town called Gopher Gulch.

  11. That was the worst little town in the world.

  12. There were no sidewalks, just muddy paths.

  13. Gopher Gulch was a lonesome place, too.

  14. There were only three families there when we moved in.

  15. After a while, Gopher Gulch started to grow.

  16. We even put up a sign that said “Gopher Gulch.”

  17. Fine new businesses seemed to be popping up overnight!

  18. Ten new businesses opened up in the spring of 1850.

  19. It was a good thing to have a bakery and a general store.

  20. Many people stayed in the new hotel.

  21. People living in tents enjoyed taking baths in the new bath house.

  22. My mom will be glad when we can build a church.

  23. The best things to come to Gopher Gulch though, were sidewalks.
