  1. How to Conduct an AdvoChat John Coghlan and Brandon Rhone

  2. Do’s Introduce Yourself Explain the Purpose of the chat to the student Make it a Relaxed Environment Have a Question plan in case the student does not have many questions Ask Open Ended Questions (Yes and NO questions are conversation killers) Be CLEAR, CONCISE, AND ARTICULATE Don’ts Hog the interview, let the student ask their questions Be intimidating you are not a counselor Act uninterested, you are representing the school so focus your attention on the student Do’s and Don'ts

  3. Chatting With A Purpose • The point of having a chat is to allow the interested student and the university a chance to get acquainted. Comments are recorded and interviews are considered like another letter of recommendation in the admissions process. The most important part is to create a positive memory for the student.

  4. It’s all about the Logistics…The Comment Sheet • Before the chat you will be given a comment sheet • Add comments that may not be as evident in the general application. • Use specific examples to support you comments. • Please keep in mind that is a very helpful aid to the admissions counselors so be honest. • Take your time, enjoy the process, and please leave your John Hancock on the sheet before you leave.

  5. Final Thoughts • This is an informal interview so keep it relaxed • Remember you are representing your school and often are creating a first impression on the student • This can be fun so open up and have a good time with the student.
