  3. Faculty Salary Incentive Update • Audit Complete – Posted on Provost Report link • Serious non-compliance with federal law and UM System policy • Disclosed to cognizant federal agency (DoEd) • $1.05M repayment [working with chairs to identify options] • Posted on Provost Report Link

Next Steps/Possible Outcomes • Department of Justice Investigation Possible • Potential for fines and sanctions • Disclosed to cognizant federal agency (DoEd) • Restrictions on grant submissions, restrictions on federal financial aid are possible • Audit of use of gift and endowment funds under former policy has initiated in Advancement • Separate compliance audit in OSP is being organized

Next Steps/Possible Outcomes Continued • New policy is nearing completion • Faculty will have a chance to review and comment soon • In meantime, all those eligible under new terms will continue to receive incentive • A very few will be restricted or modified • Must be 100% compliant in all applicable laws and regulations

Vice Provost for Research • Dr. Krishnamurthy has resigned effective January 25 • Have sought nominations for Interim VPR • Tasked a group to create concept for position going forward • They will be seeking input from many constituents • Other dissimination to follow • National search expected to begin later this spring • Concurrently, compliance audit within OSP expected to begin soon • Assurance that no delays in normal processing of grant proposals

Dean of Engineering and Computing Update • Acting Dean named, Dr. John Myers • Earlier negotiation with Interim Dean centered aground adjusting university policies which have impact on many constituents • Other college, other divisions and departments, principle investigations, etc. • All of these were/are legitimate areas for future consideration • Not appropriate to negotiate unilaterally

Dean of Engineering and Computing Update Continued • Working with CEC chairs on a tentative timeline to consider those resources and move toward next steps in this transition • Next step – VCFA and I are forming a task force to examine benchmarking deans office(s) funding and related issues • Define responsibilities of office • “Right size” annual budget • Consideration of sources • Current discretionary, recurring funds

Graduate Fellowships • Chancellor’s Fellowship (CF) • Phased out; no new awards made after Fall 2015 • Provost’s Fellowship (PF) • To be launched in February 2016; steady state of 60 PFs • ~$16,000-$24,000 annual stipend (department commitment) + tuition and fees (campus commitment) • 1 year PFs (20); 2 year PFs (20); 3-4 year PFs (20) • Chancellor’s Distinguished Fellowship (CDF) • Launched Spring 2015 • $28,000 + all tuition and fees + $1,250 travel stipend per year for 3-4 years (includes 1 year commitment from the department) • Dissertation Completion Fellowship (DCF) • Piloted Spring 2015, renewed for Spring 2016 (open now) • $24,000 + all tuition and fees for one year for ~10 doctoral students who have passed their comps

College of Arts, Sciences, and Business • Jonathan Finch (Arts, Languages, and Philosophy) has published a new book entitled, A Crisis of Belief, Ethics and Faith (University Press of America) • Tseggai Isaac (History and Political Science) has published a new book entitled, The Third World in Global Perspective: A Journey from Hope to Despair (African World Press) • Jeanne Stanley (Arts, Languages, and Philosophy), cast and students of “Good Kids” received awards of excellence from The Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival for their production • Thomas Schuman (Chemistry) has received funds totaling $238,283 from General Atomics for his project: “Processing Science to Enable Scale-Up of Dielectric Films for Wound Film Capacitors”

College of Arts, Sciences, and Business UM Research Board Recipients • Michael Bruening (History and Political Science) has received $24,542 for his project: “Varieties of Fresh Protestantism” • Ulrich Jentschura (Physics) has received $24,480 for his project: “Antimatter, Atomic Physics and Gravity” • Manashi Nath (Chemistry)has received $23,000 for her project: “Designed Growth of Superparamagnetic Nanostructures and Optimizing their Hypothermia Efficiency” • Risheng Wang (Chemistry) has received $56,397 for her project: “DNA Assisted Self-assembly of Nanodiamond for Biomedical Application”

Office of Undergraduate Studies • The SILO House, i.e., Smart Innovative Living Oasis - 2017 • Proposal was selected for competition in the Department of Energy Solar Decathlon. • The primary architectural & structural features include the use of recycled steel grain bin, a lofted roof to allow passive thermal gain, & architectural outdoor living space. It will include active & passive solar systems, reclaimed gray water, recycled steel construction, and home automation. • Undergraduate Research Day at the Capitol - March 15, 2016 • 20 students with 16 projects have been selected to participate in this event. • This is a UM System-wide event in Jefferson were students are invited to assemble in the capitol building rotunda to display research posters and to speak with legislators about their research and how it is significant in addressing the needs of society. • Missouri S&T Undergraduate Research Conference • Application Process is Open • Applications due March 8, 2016 • Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experiences Program • Application Process is Open • Applications due March 1, 2016

Office of Graduate Studies • Three Minute Thesis (3MT) event held in November for students to describe their research in three minutes with one PowerPoint slide to a panel of judges • First Place: Maigha, PhD Student in Electrical and Computer Engineering • Runner-Up: Joshua Heck, MS Student in Mechanical Engineering • People’s Choice: Paul Manley, PhD student in Civil Engineering • Chancellor’s Distinguished Fellowship • Reviewing first round of applications, planning to award early February • Fellowship still open through Spring 2016 (until filled) • Experience S&T (campus visit program) • Now open to international students residing in U.S. • Spring visit dates: • January 28-30 • February 25-26 • April 1 • April 28-29 • Technical Editing • 114 graduate editing requests were completed for FS 2015 (up 713% from FS 2014) • 2,246 pages were edited for FS 2015 (up 1,101% from FS 2014) • 25 writing development sessions were conducted for FS 2015 • 12 Meet the Editor department visits were conducted for FS 2015 • Graduate Learning Outcomes • End-of-semester GLO reporting survey went out on December 23 • As of December 29, one-third of departments (6 out of 18) completed the survey.

Enrollment Management • Top 18 Missouri high school seniors selected on December 5 for Chancellor’s Scholarship. • 44% female • 78% are engineering (82% for total FTC group) • 11% are non-white • 4.40 average GPA • 34.2 average ACT (3 with perfect 36) • Monday, February 15 is Open House. • First freshman PRO registration day for Fall 2016 is Saturday, February 27.

Office of Sponsored Programs Summary of FY16 activities year-to-date (October) Number of funded proposals up 25% for a total of 125 Total dollars is $15.2M which is down 14% Number of new proposals submitted is down 3% at 172 Total dollars is $50M which is down 17% Number of active awards is down by 1.4% at 596 Total expenditures is $15.5M which is up 11% Net grant and contract expenditures is $11.8M which is up 12.3% F&A recovered is $2.1M which is down 8%
