  1. Rube Goldberg Elizabeth Buckholtz

  2. Schedule • Learning Target • I can use the engineering design process to create a Rube Goldberg machine. • I can describe energy transfers and transformations in my Rube Goldberg.

  3. Rube Goldberg http://www.rubegoldberg.com/

  4. Rube Goldberg http://www.rubegoldberg.com/

  5. Rube Goldberg http://www.rubegoldberg.com/

  6. Rube Goldberg • Show Videos

  7. Rube Goldberg Challenge • Challenge • Build a device that has a minimum of 4 steps. • Trace energy transfer & transformations. • Points for requirements • Extra points

  8. Points Requirements • 4 steps 5 points per step • Correct identification of energy transfer or transformation 5 points per step • Incorporation of one of the following types of energy – heat, electric 5 points • Successful completion of sequence 5 points • Scientific Professionalism 10 points • Participation (5 pts. from teacher) • Respect (5 pts. from team)

  9. Points Extra Points • Additional Steps 1 points per step • Correct identification of energy transfer or transformation in additional step 1 points per step • Incorporation of an extra one of the following types of energy – heat, electric 3 points

  10. Class Competition • Creative • Complicated • Most steps • Most types of energy • Fastest • Longest • Most useful

  11. Rube Goldberg Schedule • Choose materials and decide on outcome and sequence - 20 min • Scientist Meeting • Tell outcome and explain steps • Work time – 45min • As groups are ready, present projects • Present Projects – 60 min • Create energy transfer diagram

  12. Rube Goldberg • Show video from Rube Goldberg with diagram folder.

  13. Energy transfer diagram

  14. Energy Transfer Diagram List steps • push lever • causing incline plane to lift • causing marble to roll down incline plane • marble to rolls around curved track • causing Dominos to fall • causing car to roll down ramp • causing marble to roll on track • when marble reaches end of track it falls down into cup

  15. Energy Transfer Diagram • Draw boxes under each step. • Write energy being used • Draw arrows between boxes and label arrows transfer or transformation. • Additional boxes can be drawn when energy is added to the system

  16. Energy transfer diagram

  17. Energy Transfer Diagram • Create a diagram with each step in order • Draw a box under each step • Label the type of energy in the box • Draw arrows connecting the boxes • Label arrows transfer/transformation • Use additional boxes and arrows to show energy inputs (if applicable).
