  3. Symbols • Symbols are special signs that go beyond just pointing to something else. They are filled with deep meaning that comes from within. • Symbols call forth deep feelings. • Symbols have more than one meaning. • What a symbol stands for is connected to what it is.

  4. Types of SymbolsConcept B • ‘There are two types of symbols. • Cultural Symbols have their meaning rooted in a particular culture or time. They can change or lose their meaning all together. • Universal Symbols can be understood by people of many different cultures.

  5. Literal Thinking VS. Symbolic Thinking. Concept C Literal thinking is taking things only at face value. Being concerned with just the “facts”. There are times literal thinking is necessary and good. To only think on the literal level closes the door to the possibility of there being a deeper meaning to what our limited senses can detect.

  6. Symbolic Thinking • Symbolic thinking allows us to talk about our emotional, intellectual, spiritual experiences. • We speak of love, hope, faith in symbolic terms. • Symbolic thinking helps us discover the many meanings that the things of our world can have. • Symbolic thinking helps us see beyond the surface of things and therefore is a skill necessary to celebrate the sacraments.

  7. Symbol sharing • Bring something symbolic to you that you are willing to share with the class. • Be prepared to tell us about your object: • What is it? • Where did you get it? • What does it mean to you?/Why is it important to you? • How does it help or challenge you to be a better person? • 10pts
