  2. Advanced Pronoun Usage Agreement in Number & Gender Agreement in Person Using Correct Case

  3. Pronoun Review pronoun – replaces a noun antecedent- the noun that was replaced Ex. Sheila took her brother to school.

  4. Pronoun Agreement • A pronoun must match its antecedent in number: • plural antecedent / plural pronoun • The spies shared their secrets. • singular antecedent / singular pronoun • The group has its meeting here.

  5. Practice • Directions: Write each sentence, adding a pronoun that agrees with the antecedent in number. • 1. People should protect _____ valuables. • 2. The city got _____ name from the Spanish. • 3. The seniors wore _____ rings proudly. • 4. Cars cost more than _____ owners expect. • 5. The band starts _____ tour tomorrow.

  6. Pronoun Agreement • A pronoun must match its antecedent in gender. • feminine antecedent / feminine pronouns • she, her, and hers • Freddy’s aunt takes pictures of her nephew. • masculine antecedents / masculine pronouns • he, him, and his • Freddy’s father is embarrassed by his son. • neutral antecedent / neutral pronoun • it • Venus has its orbit near to Earth. • Plural antecedents / plural pronoun (gender doesn’t matter) • they, them, their, and theirs • My parents took their vacation together.

  7. Pronoun Agreement • if gender of antecedent unknown, use he/she or he or she or even s/he. • My cousin returned their books to the library. (incorrect) • Everyone returned his or her books to the library. (correct)

  8. Practice • Directions: Write each sentence, adding a pronoun in each blank that agrees in number/gender with the antecedent. • 1. Mary turned in _____ report. • 2. William will lend _____ book. • 3. The teams are wearing _____ new uniforms. • 4. The vanilla has lost _____ flavor. • 5. The officer will do _____ best. • 6. The principal gave _____ recommendation.

  9. Gender Issues • The traditional use of the universal "he" appears biased toward men and against women. • Each student should save his questions toward the end. • Some groups and individuals have used non-standard pronouns, hoping they will become standard: • hu, hus, hum, humself (for s/he, his/hers, him/her, himself/herself) • For now, just try to vary the order of he or she, she/he as much as possible.

  10. Bellwork(5/8/12) • Directions: Write each sentence and underline the antecedent. Then fill the blank with a pronoun that agrees with the antecedent in number and gender. • 1. Daniel left _____ sunglasses on the table. • 2. The building lost _____ electricity yesterday afternoon. • 3. These puppies still belong with _____ mother. • 4. Somebody dropped _____ belongings on the floor. • 5. Many good athletes spend _____ time training. • 6. No one broke _____ promise about studying. • 7. Nora placed _____ watch on the nightstand.

  11. Agreement in Person • pronouns must agree with antecedents in person (1st, 2nd, or 3rd). • 1st person pronouns = I, me, my, we, us, our • 2nd person pronouns = you, your • 3rd person pronouns = he, she, it, her, hers, him, his, they, them, their, one, everybody, etc.

  12. Pronoun Antecedent Agreement in Person • Don’t confuse your reader by writing in 3rd person and switching to 2nd or 1st person and vice versa. • When a person comes to class, you should have homework ready. (incorrect) • When a person comes to class, we should have homework ready. (incorrect) • When a person comes to class, he or she should have homework ready. (correct)

  13. Practice • 1. People think that if you live in a big city life is easier. • 2. I hate to proofread because editing is a boring thing for you to do. • 3. One should always leave your forwarding address. • 4. My favorite holiday is Thanksgiving because you never know what food will be served. • 5. Why should I study literature? You don't get anything out of it.

  14. Novel Pre-Reading Activity • The transition into teenage years involves developing your personal identity. • Write a paragraph that describes you and explains what makes you unique. • consider future goals and dreams; what you value in friends; and favorite pets, sports, music, books, movies, etc.

  16. Using Correct Pronoun Case • If the pronoun comes before the verb, use nominative case. • I [solved] the problem. • If the pronoun comes after the verb, use the objective case. • Carlos [saved] me a seat.

  17. Pronoun Case Practice • Directions: 1) Write each sentence and bracket the verbs. 2) Then underline the pronoun in the correct case. • 1. (She,  Her) was invited to attend the party. • 2. The committee told (they, them) to write a new report. • 3. Everyone asked (he, him) to speak at the event. • 4. (We,  Us) mothers often meet at the park with our children. • 5. The bakery manager told (we, us) that fresh muffins were ready. • 6. (They, Them) and the other tree dwellers relaxed at dawn.

  18. Assignment • Complete the following workbook pages on your own: • English I: p. 166 (1-10), p. 168 (6-15) • bracket your verb before underlining the answer! • English II: p. 140 (1-10). p. 142 (1-10) • bracket your verb before underlining the answer!

  19. Homework • English I: Grammar textbook p. 553 (exercise 3, odd #s), p. 554 (exercise 4, even #s), p. 555 (Review A, #2, 7,9, 10) • You must write the sentences and bracket your verbs to receive credit! • English II: Grammar textbook p. 550 (Exercise 2, 1-10) and p.553 (1-10).

  22. Using Correct Pronoun Case • Use the nominative case if the pronoun follows a linking verb (“to be”—is/are, am was/were, will be). • The baseball pitcher [is] he. • It [was] I in the farmhouse window.

  23. Practice • 1. The winner of the marathon is (she, her). • 2. The ones you saw dancing were (we, us). • 3. It was (he, him). • 4. It may have been (he, him). • 5. The winners will be (he, him).

  24. Using Correct Pronoun Case • Use the objective case for a pronoun that follows a preposition. • You [spoke] [to him] recently. • [Next to her] I [placed] the chair.

  25. Practice • 1. The coaches rode with (we, us). • 2. She is always polite to (he, him). • 3. Between Vince and (he, him) sat an iguana. • 4. With (they, them) were the Malone twins. • 5. This message is from (she, her).
