Cool Facts • After encountering several august Johnson’s in his job for the railroad, the Sandburg's father renamed the family. • Carl left school at the age of thirteen to work odd jobs, from laying bricks to dishwashing, to help support his family. • The elder Sandburg, a blacksmith's helper for the nearby Chicago Burlington and Quincy railroad, purchased a three-room cottage at in 1873.
