The early Years • Born on January 19, 1946 in Locust Ridge, Tennessee, Dolly Parton was one of twelve children and knew what it was like to live poor. • Dolly Parton learned early to escape the hardships of life through her vivid and far-ranging imagination. Before she learned to read and write, she was "making up" her own songs. She got her first guitar when she was 8 and began singing on a Knoxville, Tenn., radio station at age 11. That same year, she made her first recording on Gold Band Records, a tiny independent label. She made a name for herself locally while still in high school, but she dreamed of a bigger stage. The day after she graduated in 1964, she moved to Nashville.

  3. FAME • In 1967 her first charting records were produced by Monument Records • In that same year, Porter Wagoner was looking for a new "girl singer" for his syndicated television show. Parton accepted the job. • Parton signed with RCA Records in 1968 and joined the Grand Ole Opry in 1969. However, she left Wagoner's show in 1974. Where the famous song “I will always love you” took it’s popularity. • From that point on, Dolly Parton’s career took a major flight. Countless music awards were given in her honor such as Female vocalist in 1975 & 76, entertainer of the year in 1978. But her success didn’t stop there. • She also took an interest in the acting side of fame. She starred in movies like “9-5” and sever others after, “Steel Magnolias”.

Never Ending Success… • In 87 she came back to her musical roots and continues to top the charts with songs like “Why’d you come in here looking like that” and “Islands in the stream” with Kenny Rogers. • As her fame continued to sustain herself, Parton also changed the landscape of her Tennessee stomping grounds when she opened the Dollywood theme park in 1985. (Sevierville, TN) It remains among the most popular vacation destinations in the South. She has also donated more than 1 million books to pre-school children across the United States (Imagination Library) and provides scholarships to high school students in Sevier County, Tenn. In return, the county honored her with a life-size statue in front of the courthouse.

  5. “Imagination Library” • Dolly Parton's Imagination Library program in the United State is a non-profit early childhood literacy program designed to promote early childhood literacy by providing children from birth until age 5 with positive children’s books once a month. • Parton has a few of her own books in her collection in Imagination Library. • Many early childhood programs promote the involvement.

  6. DOLLYWOOD!!! • Across 150 sprawling acres in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, not far from where Ms. Parton herself was born and raised, lies Dollywood. Much more than a theme park, Dollywood is home to roller coasters, museums, live music shows, festivals, fried food emporiums, and homage to the history and culture of the Great Smoky Mountains. • After investing more than 210 million dollars, the Dollywood franchise has grown to include water park Dolly’s Splash Country, the Dixie Stampede dinner theatres, and the Southern Gospel Music Museum and Hall of Fame. Dollywood continues to give back to the community, not only via the salaries of the hard workers, but to various local charities, including the Dollywood Foundation, Dolly’s Imagination Library, and the American Eagle Foundation.

  7. DollyWOod… • Dollywood welcomed 1.3 million visitors the first year; now about 2.5 million come annually, equaling more than 30 million visitors in the past 25 years. Dollywood is Tennessee's number one tourist attraction and employer in Pigeon Forge with 30,000 people on the payroll. When asked why she wanted to get into the theme park business, Dolly said,” I always thought that if I made it big or got successful at what I had started out to do, that I wanted to come back to my part of the country and do something great, something that would bring a lot of jobs into this area."

  8. Haven’t seen the last of dolly! • Dolly continues to record and promote her theme park as well as the many charities listed before that she supports along with her “Imagination Library”. • Dolly Parton is a famous Tennessean!
