  1. Training for the ACT Be sure to sign in on the lavender sheets. Be sure you have the PowerPoint, a highlighter, writing utensil, and sticky notes. This training is for all Room Supervisors, Proctors, Hallway Monitors, and Alternates.

  2. WHAT IS THE ACT? • Curriculum-based college admissions test • Accepted in all four-year colleges & universities in the U.S. • Helps begin the college planning & career exploration process • Multiple-choice tests in English, mathematics, reading, and science • Writing test on a prompt that defines an issue and presents 2 opposing points of view • Many colleges use ACT results to place incoming students into first-year courses • Can cost up to $80for students to take • CMS allows all juniors to take ACT at their home schools for FREE

  3. ELIGIBLE STUDENTS • All first-time 11th grade students • We must have 95%, and we have only 2 days to achieve that goal.

  4. TEST DATES & TIMES • Initial Test Day: Tuesday, March 4, 2014 • Testing must begin as soon after 7:15 a.m. as possible. • Everyone will be in homeroom. More details to come. • The lunch schedule will be altered. Release by security. • Makeup Test Day: Tuesday, March 18, 2014 • We will be on regular schedule. • No bells will ring.

TESTING FACILITY REQUIREMENTSManual pages 5-7 • Rooms must be large enough to accommodate all students on roster • Students must be 3 feet apart, facing same direction and clock • Bulletin boards with content must be covered or removed • 2 timepieces needed (wristwatch and wall clock) • Bells and PA system will be off • Hang red ACT testing sign on door and doorknob

TESTING STAFF REQUIREMENTSManual pages 8-9 • Coaches may not serve as room supervisors for one-on-one testingof a student-athlete • Students cannot be tested by a relative or guardian who serves as a Room Supervisor or Proctor • Testing Staff: • Test Supervisor: Ms. Raynor • Back-Up Test Supervisor: Mrs. Mathis • Room Supervisor = Test Administrator • Proctor • Roving Proctor = Hallway Monitor

ROOM SUPERVISORS (TEST ADMINISTRATORS) Manual page 10 • Read Supervisors’ Manual (will be on the testing site and in your testing bin) • Conduct unbiased test administration • Check ID or personally recognize and admit students • Mark attendance and ID on roster • Ensure students’ personal belongings are away from students • Direct students to seats • Read all test directions • Distribute test materials, keeping test books in serial # order • Complete proper forms • No eating or drinking during the test • Properly monitor students • Conceal and silence electronic devices • Follow the NC Testing Code of Ethics • Collect and account for all materials

PROCTORS Manual page 11 • Check ID or personally recognize and admit students • Mark attendance and ID on roster • Ensure students’ personal belongings are away from students • Direct students to seats • Help distribute test materials , keeping test books in serial # order • Verify the timing of the test • No eating or drinking during the test • Properly monitor students • Conceal and silence electronic devices • Follow the NC Testing Code of Ethics • Help collect and account for all materials

ROVING PROCTORS/HALLWAY MONITORS Manual page 11 • Assist with check-in and directing students to test rooms • Monitor hallways; keep quiet during testing and breaks • Escort students to classrooms and restrooms • Provide coverage for Room Supervisors (Test Administrators) or Proctors if a break is needed • Do not allow any visitors into the test rooms. Notify Ms. Raynor of this issue in case of ACT visits.

TEST SECURITY REQUIREMENTS & WEST MECK PROCEDURES Manual page 24 MARCH 4TH TEST DAY MORNING CHECK-OUT • Briefing Session for Room Supervisors Only • Media Center • 6:30 a.m.—6:55 a.m. • Report to locations by 7:00 a.m. to prepare room • Be prepared to Count & Complete Item A on Test Booklet Count Form (A-3 in back of manual)

  11. TEST SECURITY REQUIREMENTS & WEST MECK PROCEDURES MARCH 4TH TEST DAY • Proctors, report to locations by 7:00 a.m. to help ID students and escort them to seats • Hallway monitors, report to locations by 7:00 a.m. • Have a copy of ACT Site Plan in hand • Get walkie-talkie

  12. ADMITTING STUDENTS Manual pages 24-27 • Check for electronic devices. Use white envelopes in bins. • students into room one-by-one, check roster • Room Supervisor & Proctor should direct students to seats (do not allow them to choose their own) • Attendance (mark A’s or P’s on roster) • Identification (mark on roster) • P = Current official photo ID • L = School Identification Letter • R = Staff Recognition • If all students in a room were recognized by the same staff member, state that on the roster, indicating the name of the staff member along with his or her initials (“All students in this room were recognized by ____”)

TIMING THE TESTS Manual page 29 Break Info on pages 31-32 MARCTH 4TH TEST DAY Test 1 = 45 minutes Test 2 = 60 minutes Break = 15 minutes (monitor materials & stay in room) Test 3 = 35 minutes Test 4 = 35 minutes Break = 5 minutes (collect test materials & stay in room) Writing Test = 30 minutes

  14. CALCULATORS Manual page 30 TEST DIRECTIONS (Follow instructions exactly as written.) MARCH 4TH TEST DAY Follow pages 39-56 Students cannot test if pre-administration was not done. Read shaded areas to students. FYI: Read ALL information on these pages prior to/during the test. Follow ACT PlusWriting directions. Important to read ALL information for Room Supervisor. Distribute Test Books in Serial # Order (page 41). Record timing in manual and on board. Follow all bullet points to complete forms.

  15. REPORTING IRREGULARITIES Manual pages 33-37 MARCH 4TH TEST DAY Contact the hall monitor for any issues. The hall monitor will find Ms. Raynor or Mrs. Mathis. Irregularities will be reported using page A-6 in the manual. Suspected behavior: Warning Observed behavior: Dismissal Students dismissed for prohibited behaviors will not be rescheduled for makeup testing. They will not help us get 95% attendance, so be diligent in warning students about the rules.

  16. AFTER THE TEST Manual pages 57 MARCH 4TH TEST DAY • Do not dismiss students. Wait for an announcement or a bell. • Room Supervisor should come to Media Center for Check-In. • Bring items listed on purple sheet. Do not come to Media Center without all your items!!! • The proctor should remain with students until the Room Supervisor returns or they are dismissed (by an announcement) for last lunch. • The proctor can distribute electronic devices and provide students with Extra Credit Certificates who behave appropriately during testing.

  17. EXTRA CREDIT CERTIFICATES Tuesday, March 4, 2014 Thanks for working so hard! This certificate is good for 10 points on an assignment of your choice in the class of your choice. ___________________________________ (Write your name here) This extra credit certificate must be during 3rd quarter only. ACT Test Day Provide certificates to students who have completed the ACT and followed all of your instructions.
