  2. WHAT IS IPB IPB Is the army method for organizing information to help provide timely, accurate, and relevant intelligence to the military decision making process. The intent of IPB is to give the commander and his staff information on the conditions within the operational area, comprising the area of operations, area of interest and the battle space that could effect the mission.

  4. WHO CONDUCTS IPB • A rifleman in an infantry fire team considers the possible actions of the enemy soldier he is about to engage. He also considers how the local terrain and weather affect both himself and his adversary. • An armor company commander considers the possible actions of the enemy battalion that he is about to engage. He also considers how terrain affects the enemy’s COAS and the accomplishment of his own mission.

WHAT IPB ACCOMPLISHES • IPB identifies facts and assumptions about the battlefield environment and the threat .This enables staff planning and the development of the friendly COAS • IPB provides the basis for intelligence direction and synchronization that supports the commands chosen COA. • IPB contributes to complete staff synchronization and the successful completion of several other staff process.

  6. IPB • All S2s at the battalion and brigade level who train at the Combat Training Centers (CTCS) want to do well and ensure mission success for their units. The Intelligence Preparation of the Battlefield (IPB) process drives the entire Tactical Decision-Making Process (TDMP). IPB provides the basis for defining the courses of action (COAS) available to the friendly commander and drives the war gaming process that integrates and synchronizes the COA which, ultimately, leads to a staff recommendation to the commander. A good IPB is critical to the success of a unit's mission. Without the staff developing, integrating, and synchronizing IPB products with the TDMP, the likelihood of a successful mission is remote.

  7. TERRAIN ANALYSIS • Terrain analysis in support of air defense is significantly different from terrain analysis for ground operations. The nature of airspace does not eliminate the need for terrain analysis because enemy air and friendly ADA will still attempt to use terrain to their own best advantage. IPB focuses on the impact of geographic factors on the ability of threat air to approach, acquire, and engage a target, or deliver airborne or air assault troops. Analysis of the terrain for IPB follows the same principles as ground analysis and uses the military aspects of terrain
