  1. Consumer advocate & scientist view points of genetically engineered foods By: Tamecca Reid; Desiree Haskins; Elaine Vega Class 3

  2. Introduction • Genetic engineering can be either harmful or beneficial to the human body, medicine, or food processing.

  3. Scientist view of advantages of genetically engineered foods • One advantage is that genetically engineered foods help in controlling the occurrence of certain diseases. • By modifying the DNA system of these foods the properties causing these allergies are eliminating successfully • These genetically modified foods reduce the necessity of exposing genetically modified crops to harmful pesticides and insecticides making these foods free from chemicals and environment friendly as well.

  4. Genetically modified foods are usually enlarged, which can help save money. But if done incorrectly the color of the food may be accidentally changed as well.

  5. Benefits of GM foods • Better quality food crops • Food with greater shelf life • Foods with medicinal benefits (Edible Vaccines) • Crops resistant to disease and insects that requires less chemical application (Less environmental hazard) *GM advocates argue that genetically modified foods are potentially better for the environment

  6. Risk • New allergens could be transferred from know allergens to GM foods. (EX. Lab test a gene from the brazil nut was introduced into soy beans. People with allergies to Brazil nuts could also be allergic to the soybeans that has been genetically Modified.

  7. Cross Breeding • Cross breeding between GM crops and surrounding vegetation including weeds, could result in weeds that are herbicide resistant which may require a greater use of herbicides leading to soul and water contamination.

  8. Labeling • Some food labeling laws are strong enough FDA has biotechnology foods labeled if they can cause an allergy or if they have Significantly altered. But labeling foods may have consumers thinking negatively about the foods. And no one would buy them
