  1. MUSING:MUlti-industry, Semantic-based next generation business INtelliGence IST Project Number : FP6 – 027097 Funded by the European Commission, IST, Unit E2 Knowledge Management and Content Creation MUSING

  2. Overview MUSING aims at developing a new generation of Business Intelligence (BI) tools and modules based on semantic-based knowledge and content systems. MUSING will integrate Semantic Web and Human Language technologies and combine declarative rule-based methods and statistical approaches for enhancing the technological foundations of knowledge acquisition and reasoning in BI applications. The breakthrough impact of MUSING on semantic-based BI, and its paradigm of multi-industry potentiality will be measured as the result of user-driven RTD developments in three vertical domains: • Finance, through development and validation of next generation (Basel II and beyond) semantic-based BI solutions, with particular reference to Credit Risk Management; • Internationalisation, (i.e., the process that allows an enterprise to evolve its business from a local to an international dimension, hereby expressly focusing on the information acquisition work concerning international partnerships, contracts, investments) through development and validation of next-generation semantic-based internationalisation platforms; • Operational Risk Management, through development and validation of semantic-driven knowledge systems for measurement and mitigation tools, with particular reference to operational risks faced by IT-intensive organisations. 4. Main S&T objectives • Development of an innovative, self-adapting BI system that integrates and specialises high-level semantic technologies for supporting next level of effectiveness in operations in different industries; • Combined use of declarative rule-based approaches and statistical methods in semantic technology; • Modelling and recognising evolving knowledge accounting for temporal logic; • Validation of RTD results in three high-impact vertical domains; • Support to development of innovative technologies that enable enterprise’s self-assessment. MUSING

  5. Prime tangible results • A set of innovative knowledge management components to be utilised in multiple industries • An integrated, self-adapting framework to develop specialised BI applications for vertical industries • Validation and demonstration of readily-exploitable semantic-based BI solutions in three vertical domains; • Creation of BI awareness and knowledge in scientific, public and business sectors through a broad dissemination of project innovation; • Specifically trained researchers and end-users resulting from MUSING training campaigns. MUSING

  6. Expected impact • Impact on a broad spectrum of users: private enterprises (especially SMEs) of various industries; public and private financial institutions, rating agencies, trading operators, investors; public ad-ministrations and private information providers; analysts and researchers, etc.; • Cross-fertilisation among the various scientific communities involved by MUSING; • Dissemination beyond research circles of semantic-based business intelligence solutions; • Strategic and tactic impact on access to credit by enterprises, by contributing to building a stronger relationship (in line with the principles of the upcoming international “Basel II” accord on Capital Adequacy), based on new knowledge extracted from otherwise unexploited information, between companies and financial institutions; • Tangible impact on the capability of delivering innovative services for companies to support them in the process of internationalization, basing the relationships on a trusted and manageable knowledge, owing to semantic-based technologies; • Tangible impact on the capability of delivering innovative services for companies to properly man-age the operational risk and to follow its evolution, by generating and injecting new knowledge and scientific findings into the risk management processes.
