The Conversion Of The Samaritans

The extent of the Great Commission was “the gospel into all the world” - to preach to every creature of every nation (Matt. 28:18-20; Mk. 16:15-16). The first step outside the boundaries of strict Judaism was the preaching of the gospel to the Samaritans (Acts 8).

  1. The extent of the Great Commission was “the gospel into all the world” - to preach to every creature of every nation (Matt. 28:18-20; Mk. 16:15-16). • The first step outside the boundaries of strict Judaism was the preaching of the gospel to the Samaritans (Acts 8). 2. The extent of the Great Commission was “the gospel into all the world” - to preach to every creature of every nation (Matt. 28:18-20; Mk. 16:15-16). • The first step outside the boundaries of strict Judaism was the preaching of the gospel to the Samaritans (Acts 8). • This Gospel’s progress to this region was brought on by intense persecution by the unbelieving Jews in Jerusalem (Acts 8:1). Christians were driven from their homes and scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria where they went about preaching (Acts 8:4). • Among those scattered was Philip the evangelist, one "full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom" (Acts 6:3), who went and preached the Gospel to Samaria. • Our study focuses upon the conversion of the Samaritans that resulted from Philip’s efforts. 4. The message to the Samaritans involved… • Certifying proof • The claim of the text is that Philip "preached Christ to them" (Vs. 5) which is equivalent to preaching "the things concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ" (vs. 12). • The question to consider is how the Samaritans could know that his message was authentic; i.e., that it was truly the word of God? 5. • The answer is seen in the proof he offered to support his message. Philip’s preaching did not consist of unsupported assertions but authenticated divine proof (vs. 6; Heb. 2:3-4, Mk. 16:20). The Conversion Of The Samaritans

Philip’s preaching did not consist of unsupported assertions but authenticated divine proof (vs. 6; Heb. 2:3-4, Mk. 16:20). • The same confirmation allows confidence today (Ps. 119:89, Matt. 16:19). We can know the truth that led to the conversion of the Samaritans and allow it to produce the same effect in our lives. The Conversion Of The Samaritans

  7. The message to the Samaritans involved… • Preaching Jesus as the Christ. • The Samaritans had an expectation of the coming of the Messiah and understood their responsibilities toward Him (John 4:25; CF. Deut. 18:15-19). The Conversion Of The Samaritans

  8. The message to the Samaritans involved… • Preaching Jesus as the Christ. • The Samaritans had an expectation of the coming of the Messiah and understood their responsibilities toward Him (John 4:25; CF. Deut. 18:15-19). • Philip affirmed and they believed that Jesus was the Messiah (Acts 8:12). The Conversion Of The Samaritans

  9. • We must understand the same today (Heb. 5:9; Heb. 2:3-4). We cannot escape the condemnation of the world if we refuse to believe and obey Christ. We must recognize Him as the Messiah and heed His commands. The Conversion Of The Samaritans

  10. The message to the Samaritans involved… • Preaching the kingdom of God which is the church of Christ. • Christ came to build His church and He accomplished His mission (Matt. 16:18-19). The Conversion Of The Samaritans

  11. The message to the Samaritans involved… • Preaching the kingdom of God which is the church of Christ. • Christ came to build His church and He accomplished His mission (Matt. 16:18-19). • The church exists today and consists of members of the Kingdom who submit to Christ as their king (Acts 2:47; Col. 1:13, 18). The Conversion Of The Samaritans

  12. The message to the Samaritans involved… • Preaching “the name of Jesus Christ”. • To preach "the name of Christ" is to preach the authority of Christ (Eph. 1:20-22, Matt. 28:18) The Conversion Of The Samaritans

  13. The message to the Samaritans involved… • Preaching “the name of Jesus Christ”. • To preach "the name of Christ" is to preach the authority of Christ (Eph. 1:20-22, Matt. 28:18) • To preach "the name of Christ" is to teach people to recognize the authority of Christ in everything they do (Col. 3:17). The Conversion Of The Samaritans

  14. The message to the Samaritans involved… • Teaching people to be baptized • We know that preaching Christ involved preaching baptism by the response of the Samaritans (Acts 8:12-13). • This was not a unique response of the Samaritans (Acts 2:38, 41; 8:38; 10:48; 16:15, 33; 18:8; 19:5). The Conversion Of The Samaritans

  15. • If Philip’s preaching did not include commanding them to be baptized as the God-appointed way to manifest their faith unto the remission of their sins, their behavior is completely irrational. The Conversion Of The Samaritans

  16. The result of the Samaritans obedience. • The baptized believers entered into the benefits of Christ death (Rom. 6:3, 4). The Conversion Of The Samaritans

  17. The result of the Samaritans obedience. • The baptized believers entered into the benefits of Christ death (Rom. 6:3, 4). • The baptized believers had their sins forgiven and washed away (Acts 2:38; 22:16). • The baptized believers gained entrance into the body, the church, which is the kingdom of God (John 3:5, 1 Cor. 12:13). • The baptized believers became children of God (Gal. 3:26, 27). • The baptized believers were saved (Mark 16:16, 1 Peter 3:21). The Conversion Of The Samaritans

  18. The Samaritans heard the gospel preached, they obeyed the commands of the gospel, and they received the remission of their sins and the hope of everlasting life. • To be a Christian you must do as they did: you must hear the gospel of Christ; you must believe and obey it, and having done so you will receive the remission of your sins and the hope of glory. • You cannot substitute the wisdom of men for the wisdom of God: you must do what God has commanded of you.
