  3. TRANSLATION Humility; pridelessness; nonviolence; tolerance; simplicity; approaching a bona fide spiritual master; cleanliness; steadiness; self-control; renunciation of the objects of sense gratification; absence of false ego; the perception of the evil of birth, death, old age and disease; detachment; freedom from entanglement with children, wife, home and the rest; even-mindedness amid pleasant and unpleasant events; constant and unalloyed devotion to Me; aspiring to live in a solitary place; detachment from the general mass of people; accepting the importance of self-realization; and philosophical search for the Absolute Truth — all these I declare to be knowledge, and besides this whatever there may be is ignorance.

  4. This process of knowledge is sometimes misunderstood by less intelligent men as being the interaction of the field of activity. • This process of knowledge is not the interaction of Twenty Four Elements but to get out of the entanglement of these elements. • Of all the descriptions of the process of knowledge. The most important is Mayi cānanya-yogena bhaktir avyabhicāriṇī: the process of knowledge terminates in unalloyed devotional service to the Lord.

  5. Śrīmad Bhāgavatam 5.18.12 yasyāsti bhaktir bhagavaty akiñcanā sarvair guṇais tatra samāsate surāḥ harāv abhaktasya kuto mahad-guṇā manorathenāsati dhāvato bahiḥ All the demigods and their exalted qualities, such as religion, knowledge and renunciation, become manifest in the body of one who has developed unalloyed devotion for the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Vāsudeva. On the other hand, a person devoid of devotional service and engaged in material activities has no good qualities. Even if he is adept at the practice of mystic yoga or the honest endeavor of maintaining his family and relatives, he must be driven by his own mental speculations and must engage in the service of the Lord's external energy. How can there be any good qualities in such a man?

  6. Humility • Humility means that one should not be anxious to have the satisfaction of being honored by others. • Man in perfect knowledge — who knows that he is not this body — anything, honor or dishonor, pertaining to this body is useless.

  7. Nonviolence • Nonviolence does not mean just not killing or destroying the body. • It means not to put others into distress. • Unless one elevates people to spiritual knowledge, one is practicing violence. • Nonviolence is to try his best to distribute real knowledge to the people to deliver them from material pangs.

  8. Tolerance • Practice to bear insult and dishonor from others. • Inevitable insults and dishonor due to material nature to a person engaged in advancement of spiritual knowledge should be tolerated and continue progress with determination,Eg. Prahlāda

  9. Simplicity Simplicity means that without diplomacy one should be so straightforward that he can disclose the real truth even to an enemy,e.g. boy approaching Gautam rishi for education.

  10. Approaching a bona fide spiritual master • Transcendental life begins when one accepts a bona fide spiritual master • Without the instruction of a bona fide spiritual master one cannot progress in the spiritual science • One should approach the spiritual master with all humility and offer him all services so that he will be pleased to bestow his blessings upon the disciple

  11. Cleanliness • External and Internal Cleanliness • Internal cleanliness can be attained by thinking always of Kṛṣṇa and chanting … Hare Kṛṣṇa, Hare Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa, HareHare Hare Rāma, Hare Rāma, Rāma Rāma, Hare Hare

  12. Steadiness, Self-Control and Renunciation • Steadiness means that one should be very determined to make progress in spiritual life. • Self-control means that one should not accept anything which is detrimental to the path of spiritual progress. • Real Renunciation is engaging all the senses in the Transcendental service of the Lord • Engaging tongue in eating the remnants of food stuff offered to Kṛṣṇa and chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa etc.

  13. False Ego • False ego means accepting this body as oneself. • One comes to real ego when he understands that he is not his body and is spirit soul. • ahaḿ brahmāsmi: I am Brahman, I am spirit. • "I am," the sense of self (ego), also exists in the liberated stage of self-realization. • When the sense of “I am” applied to this false body it is false ego and when applied to reality it is real ego. • Ego cannot be given up, false ego must be given up.

  14. Perception of the evil of birth, death, old age and disease • In the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam the world of the unborn, the child's stay in the womb of the mother, its suffering, etc., are all very graphically described. • Birth and Death – We forget so should be discussed as mentioned in scriptures. • Old age and Disease – every one get practical experience.

  15. Detachment • Detachment from children, wife and home, it is not meant that one should have no feeling for these, but when they are not favorable to spiritual progress, then one should not be attached to them. • Best process to making the home pleasant, • Chant Hare Kṛṣṇa • Accept the remnants of food stuffs offered to Kṛṣṇa • Discuss Bhagavad-gītā and Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam • Deity worship • Arjuna did not want to kill his family members, but when he understood that these family members were impediments to his Kṛṣṇa realization, he accepted the instruction of Kṛṣṇa and fought and killed them.

  16. Equiposed • One should learn to tolerate both hapiness and distress. • Practice of unbreakable devotional service will lead to this stage. • Devotional service to Kṛṣṇa without deviation means engaging oneself in the nine processes of devotional service — sravanam kirtanam visnoh smaranam pada-sevanam. arcanam vandanam dasyam sakhyam atma-nivedanam.

  17. Solitary place and Detachment from general mass Naturally a devotee has no taste for unnecessary sporting or cinema-going or enjoying some social function, because he understands that these are simply a waste of time.

  18. Self-Realization • Bhakti-yoga is especially practical. • Consider the relationship between the Supersoul and the individual soul. • Individual soul and the Supersoul cannot be one. • Service of the individual soul to the Supreme Soul is eternal, nityam.

  19. ŚrīmadBhāgavatam 1.2.11 vadanti tat tattva-vidas tattvaḿ yaj jñānam advayam brahmeti paramātmeti bhagavān iti śabdyate Learned transcendentalists who know the Absolute Truth call this nondual substance Brahman, Paramātmā or Bhagavān.

  20. Philosophical Search of Absolute Truth • Practicing humility up to the point of realization of the Supreme Truth, the Absolute Personality of Godhead – Staircase from Ground Floor to Top Floor. • Unless one reaches the top floor, which is the understanding of Kṛṣṇa, he is at a lower stage of knowledge. • If anyone wants to compete with God and at the same time make advancement in spiritual knowledge, he will be frustrated. • Beginning of Knowledge is humility - To think oneself to be God is most puffed up - becomes subordinate to material nature.
