  1. Bhagavad-Gita As It Is Chapter 14 The Three Modes Of Material Nature Text 1-4 Spiritual Variegatedness Total Material Substance Krishna – The Seed Giving Father

  2. Text 14.1 śrī-bhagavān uvāca paraḿ bhūyaḥ pravakṣyāmi jñānānāḿ jñānam uttamam yaj jñātvā munayaḥ sarve parāḿ siddhim ito gatāḥ The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: Again I shall declare to you this supreme wisdom, the best of all knowledge, knowing which all the sages have attained the supreme perfection.

  3. Supreme Wisdom • 7th to 12th – Śrī Kṛṣṇa in detail reveals Absolute Truth • 13th Chapter – One may possibly be freed from material entanglement by humbly developing knowledge • One can come to the understanding of Devotional service by understanding this chapter through the process of Philosophical Speculation • Modes of Material Nature – How they act ? How they bind and How they give liberation • This knowledge is far, far superior to all other processes of knowledge thus far explained • One who understands this Fourteenth Chapter will attain perfection

  4. Text 14.2 idaḿ jñānam upāśritya mama sādharmyam āgatāḥ sarge 'pi nopajāyante pralaye na vyathanti ca By becoming fixed in this knowledge, one can attain to the transcendental nature like My own. Thus established, one is not born at the time of creation or disturbed at the time of dissolution.

  5. Attaining Transcendental Nature • Knowledge uncontaminated by the three modes of material nature is called transcendental knowledge • Acquiring perfect transcendental knowledge leads to qualitative equality with Kṛṣṇa • Lack of spiritual knowledge leads to Impersonalism – No understanding of Spiritual Variegatedness • Even after liberation one does not loose his identity as an individual soul • In spiritual sky one attains spiritual form , spiritual activities – devotional life • One who develops all spiritual qualities is not affected by creation or destruction of material world

  6. Text 14.3 mama yonir mahad brahma tasmin garbhaḿ dadhāmy aham sambhavaḥ sarva-bhūtānāḿ tato bhavati bhārata The total material substance, called Brahman, is the source of birth, and it is that Brahman that I impregnate, making possible the births of all living beings, O son of Bharata.

  7. mahadbrahma – Total Material Substance • The twenty four elements beginning from earth water fire and air , are all material energy constituting mahad brahma • Everything that takes place is due to the combination of the body and spirit soul – made possible by the Supreme God • The Supreme Personality impregnates the total substance and thus innumerable universes become possible • tasmäd etad brahma näma-rüpam annaà ca jäyate – This total material substance , mahat-tattva is described as Brahman – impregraned by Supreme Person with the seeds of living entities • Material nature is not the cause of the birth of living entities – eg scorpion laying eggs in piles of rice

  8. Text 14.4 sarva-yoniṣu kaunteya mūrtayaḥ sambhavanti yāḥ tāsāḿ brahma mahad yonir ahaḿ bīja-pradaḥ pitā It should be understood that all species of life, O son of Kuntī, are made possible by birth in this material nature, and that I am the seed-giving father.

  9. The seed giving father • The Supreme Personality of Godhead Kåñëa is the original father of all living entities • Living entities are every where, not only on this planet but on every planet, even on the highest where Brahma is situated, within the earth , within the water and even within the fire • The material world is impregnated with living entities, who come out in various forms at the time of creation according to their past deeds • The Lord is the cause of all living entities in this material world
