  1. Welcome! Please sit at your child’s desk. • Find your child’s spiral journal and write him/her a special letter of encouragement. The children will be so surprised!

  2. Welcome to Parents’ Night 2012! Thanks for being here!

  3. Who is Mrs. Stook? • I am a member of the first graduating class from Gloria Dei. • Mrs. Robinson was my 3rd grade teacher. • My mom teaches pre K at Gloria Dei. • I have been teaching at Gloria Dei for over 15 years. • I am married and have a 22 year old daughter who lives and works in NOVA.

  4. Arrival/Dismissal • School starts at 8:30, but our doors open at 8:10. 8:15 is a good target time to arrive. • Bus and Carpool Bell- 2:50. • Parent Pick up- 2:55 • Child Care Bell- 3:00. • Watch Wavy 10 in case of emergency closing. • 5 tardies per quarter = conference with Mrs. Robinson

  5. SNACK! • Daily snack- around 10:00. • One HEALTHY snack/one drink • Pick a snack to give your child an energy brain boost.

  6. NEW GRADING SCALE • 100-90 A • 89-80 B • 79-70 C • 69-64 D • 63 and below F

  7. Homework Expect about 40 minutes a night. STUDYING is a MUST!!!! Give your child some time to get adjusted to the new routine. Contact me if you are having “Homework Wars.”

  8. HOMEWORK OFFENSES • START NEXT WEEK! • 1STOffense- make up the missed assignment(s) • 2nd Offense- make up assignments and miss half of recess • 3rd Offense- make up assignments, miss all of recess, and detention is scheduled for the next TUESDAY from 3:00-4:00. • Automatic NI on report card for 3 or more offenses.

  9. ReadingOverview • Stresses vocabulary and comprehension • Comprehension Tests- Wednesdays • Vocabulary Tests – Fridays • Vocabulary spiral should be kept in the binder. Studying is essential! • AR- Accelerated Readers Program - 5% towards final grade • Kids read and take quizzes on the computer. Points accumulate and prizes are awarded.

  10. Math Overview Lots of new concepts will be taught! Fractions, place value, problem solving, long division, measurements, double-digit multiplication, triple digit multiplication,… Math Test or Math Quiz given each week Kids must know their facts!!! Practice at home is CRUCIAL if weak. Some practice drills are timed and graded.

  11. Language • By the 2nd quarter..all work is to be completed in cursive. • 3 book reports -AR book report- due Oct. 11. • Creative writing, journal writing, outlining • Mini-Research paper on an Inventor/Invention– Final copy must be typed at home. Outline/ note taking, and start of rough draft will be done at school. (3rd Quarter) • Unit Tests occur when we have completed a unit. Study Guides will be given.

  12. Spelling • List and Dictation Tests are usually given on Thursdays. • Lists are found in the binder in a sleeve. One bonus word is given. • Dictation tests- 3 sentences (3 points per mistake)

  13. Social Studies • 1st and 3rd quarters • VA history is the focus • 2 tests per unit (most units): Multiple Choice, Study Skills, Fill in Blanks, Short Answer, and Essays • Studying is CRUCIAL! • Each unit will have a study guide outline. • Brochure Region Project- Due September 28th.

  14. Science • 2nd and 4th quarters • Notes taken in outline form…good study guide • Focus on earth science, life science, and the human body • Test at end of each chapter. Studying is a must! (Multiple choice/short answer) • Project- 4th quarter- Design your own invention!!!

  15. Honor Roll • A’s and B’s only. No C’s. New 10 point grading scale! • No NI or I’s in work habits or resource classes. • A child consistently not completing his/her work on time will be kept off the honor roll. • A child who is lacking self control (TALKING TOO MUCH) will be kept off the honor roll. • 3 homework offenses a quarter = NI on report card automatically.

  16. Field Trips • NO siblings may attend field trips. • Please help if you are able! • Parents must be willing to follow the bus and mute cell phones. Kids are our priority. 4 trips: • Colonial Williamsburg- October 12 • Harriet Tubman’s Freedom Train- February 22 • Endview Plantation - spring • VA Sports Hall of Fame- spring

Dress Code: What NOT to Wear: • PLEASE REVIEW THE MANUAL FOR CHANGES IN THE DRESS CODE FOR FOURTH GRADE. • Leggings may not be worn without skirt/shorts/top coming to about the knee. • Shorts and skirts must be at the knee or longer. • No writing across the rear. • No flip flops or high heels, please. • No tank tops. • Please help me with this policy….I don’t want to have to be the daily fashion police .

  18. SAT Week- May 6-10 There are NO make up tests given due to vacations during scheduled test dates. Any time you are taking your child out of school on a planned vacation, please send me a note with the dates so I can prepare make up work. The dates must come from YOU, not your child.

  19. Eye Exams • I STRONGLY recommend an eye exam done by an optometrist/ophthalmologist this school year!!!!

  20. Party Time! No siblings allowed at parties. Fourth grade has SIMPLE parties!!!! 30 minutes….eat and enjoy. If you signed up to send in food or supplies, please do so no later than the morning of the party. Thanks!

  21. Communication! • Website…www.gloriadeilutheranschool.net • Sign up for Newsflashes. • Binders- children should give you graded work daily. • Check grades on line! Students have ID numbers. • E-mail me-non- emergency information only. • Call me at SCHOOL- 851-6292 or send me a note! • Remember- We are a TEAM! • Just as you have high expectations of your child, I have high expectations for your child!
