Ilustrado nationalism • 1887 – Jose Rizal publishes Noli me Tangere • 1891 – Rizal publishes El Filibusterismo • 1892 – Rizal helps establish La Liga Filipina • 1896 – Rizal executed for sedition and treason • 1896 – Andres Bonifacio establishes Katipunan • 1897 – Bonifacio executed by Emilio Aguinaldo • June 1898 – Aguinaldo declares independence • Dec 1898 – Treaty of Paris signed “ilustrado” – Spanish for “enlightened one”
