  1. Do You Know Some Random Facts? By: Paige Zupan Chelsea Theriault Sean Furman Period 8

  2. Purpose • To see how VVS students’ and faculty members’ knowledge compares to the population used for the online survey.

  3. Design • We found a online random test with a large sample size (1,458 takers), so we chose that test as our survey and that was our population. Our sample size was 95 people.

  4. Hypotheses • H0 : µ = 4.72 • H1: µ> 4.72 • We predicted that the VVS knowledge test scores would be greater than the population’s test scores.

  5. Collecting Data • Monday Jan. 7 & Tuesday Jan. 8 • 6th and 7th period • Set up table outside of cafeteria • Asked people to take survey • Gave participants candy upon completion • Total of 95 people took test

  6. Our sample had an average of 5.53684 correct answers • Margin of Error of +/- 0.273293752 • Confidence level of 95 %

  7. Question #1: How many claws does the average cat have? 6.3 % 93.7 % Answer: 18

  8. Question #2: In the equation y=mx+b, what variable is the slope? 56.8 % 43.2% Answer: m

  9. Question #3: How many bones do you have in your body? 89.5 % 10.5 % Answer: 206

  10. Question #4: ‘For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction’ is… 29.5 % 70.5 % Answer: Newton’s 3rd Law

  11. Question #5: What animal has the most taste buds on their tongue? 44.2 % 55.8 % Answer: Human

  12. Question #6: Autism is a …? 95.8 % 4.2 % Answer: Mental disorder

  13. Question #7: Loquacious means ? 28.4 % 71.6 % Answer: Talkative

  14. Question #8: Who is the author of Twilight? 82.1 % 17.9 % Answer: Stephanie Meyer

  15. Question #9: What city is the capital of New York? 95.8 % 4.2 % Answer: Albany

  16. Question #10: If you have blonde hair you have a lot of _______ in your hair. 21.2 % 78.9 % Correct Answer: Melanin Key Answer: Sulfur

  17. Females v. Males • Female average score: 5.65 • Male average score is 5.28 • A difference of +0.37 favoring females

  18. Our Calculations __ t = X-µ s/√n __ X = 5.53684 (Error = .273293752) S=1.35905 N=95 µ=4.72 t= 5.880826806 t = 5.53684-4.72 1.35905/ √95 t = 5.880826806 Margin of Error E= tc s/√n E=t.95 1.35905/√95 E= 1.96 (1.35905/ √95) E=.273293752

  19. T-Test H0 : µ = 4.72 H1: µ> 4.72 P(µ> 4.72) P( t > 5.88) P( t > 5.88) = .000000031 ∝= .01 • Since our probability is below the level of significance, • We reject H0

  20. Evaluation • Mostly went as planned • #10 on quiz • Incorrect answer online, but we corrected with same key as online, so the statistics match up but would most likely be higher if the question was correct on the key

  21. Modifications • Survey 5th period to get a larger sample size • No one in our group was free that period, so ask people around the school, not just during lunch • Set up a more individual testing process • Students discussed questions/answers with peers, go into cafeteria and ask, rather than people come to us

  22. Biases • Motivation • Reasons for taking test differed, some wanted to see what they knew, more involved students participated • May have brought average up • Candy • Some students did the survey just to get candy, no thought was put into it • May have brought average down
