Learning OutcomesAt the end of the session students will be able to state: • The role of the fire service at silo incidents • The purpose and operation of resources at silo incidents • The methods used to gain access and egress at silos • The hazards and risks associated with silo rescues with regard to self, others and resources.

  4. Hazards and risks • Falls from height • Internal conditions • Dangerous machinery • Materials stored • Manual handling.

  5. Rescues • Consult with responsible person • Consider need for rescue • Control of power supply • Hazards of materials.

  6. Silos Note the two different types of outlet.

  7. Risk analysis and control • Dynamic risk assessment • Question need to enter silo • Supervise entry points • Test atmosphere inside • Use radio if safe • BA entry control • High use of air.

  8. Safety harness or line • Effective anchorage • Securely fixed • Tied to person entering silo • Strictly supervised • Each one marked.

  10. Silos Concrete construction 20 m high 6 m diameter.
