  3. POSSESSIVE OWNERSHIP • A noun that is being possessed/owned by a person or thing • Phrase to identify ownership: _______________ of the ______________ • Read the sentence and identify what is being possessed. Translate to this phrase!

  4. EXAMPLES • The young nations athletes were competing. _______________ of the ______________ athletes of the young nation = young nation’s athletes

  5. EXAMPLES • The competitors victories won him praise. _______________ of the ______________ victories of the competitor = competitor’s victories

  6. EXAMPLES • Johns tooth was bothering him . _______________ of the ______________ tooth of John = John’s tooth

  7. Notice!!!!!!!!!!! • The second blank of the phrase contain the words that show ownership and require apostrophe use! hair of the dog = dog’s hair candy of the jar = jar’s candy

  8. APOSTROPHE PLACEMENT • Determine if the noun is singular or plural • If singular, always use ‘s • If plural, place apostrophe in front of plural form. 3 dogs’ bones OR men’s clothing

  9. EXAMPLES • Feathers of the geese = geese’s feathers • Lid of the box = box’s lid • food of many deer = deer’s food • Food of one deer = deer’s food
