From the school website Assessment and Recording : Principles For new Year 9 Curriculum starting September 2013 In Years 9 to 11, pupils will be set targets based on an aspirational range of attainment. This means that their work will be marked and assessed using GCSE/BTEC criteria and notional* grades. When designing the curriculum for Year 9, Subject Leaders will be taking into account the most appropriate topics for study in order to ensure that pupils can achieve in the early stages of the course. However, owing to the fact that we aspire to the very best outcomes for all pupils, it is likely that their targets will feel challenging to begin with. When reporting on progress, we will take into account the rate of progress measured against each individual’s target. Therefore, even if a pupil’s current grade does not fall within their range of attainment, they may well still be considered ‘on target’ as their work demonstrates the necessary potential to meet this expectation. *Notional grades – approximate grades based on historical data

  5. Current Grade/ Level of Attainment The current grade/ level of attainment represents the performance of the pupil in recent units of enquiry. It does not mean that this is the grade/level the pupil would achieve if they were to sit a GCSE exam today. Due to the breadth of each subject area, it may be that a pupil’s performance does not currently fall within their target range of attainment; although unlikely, the grade/level could also be lower than that which was previously reported. This reflects the nature of progress across Key Stages Three and Four: whilst the overall trend is usually positive, there will be aspects of each course in which pupils do not perform at their usual level. Owing to the breadth of study required in Key Stage 4, it may also be the case that a pupil remains at the same ‘Current Grade’ over a number of progress reports. A more holistic view of a pupil’s progress and work ethic can be seen in the marks awarded under Effort and Progress on the report.

  7. Successes of 2013 Pupil effort 179/209 graded 2.00 (Good) or above for average effort in November 2013. Pupil attainment 119/209 pupils graded all 1s and 2s for both effort and progress. Uniform All pupils now wearing school jumper. New blazers phasing in as pupils outgrow old ones. House system Year 9 have embraced the new House system and are picking up 1 house point for every 30 merits they achieve.

Member of staff:………………………………………… You have been placed on ‘Gapwatch’ as there are too many gaps in your planner. You must ensure you collect a merit stamp or code from every lesson. Any gaps in your planner at your 2nd check will result in a 5 minute DT per gap. GAPWATCH Boys A traditional gap in attainment that we are proud is minimised in our school and one we hope to continue closing. Gaps in planners We are closely monitoring planner to ensure pupils always collect a merit or a code for a lesson. Gaps do not help us with this process, as we cannot tell if it is positive or negative.

  9. Targets going into 2014 Attendance As always, we would like to reemphasise the importance of attendance at school. Although figures are skewed at this early stage, after 10 weeks we are able to build a clearer picture of how attendance is beginning to effect progress. If we look at the data from last year, we can see how the trend develops over the course of a year. Data taken from 12/13 cohort
