  1. PATENT-dfmm : Design for Micro & Nano Manufacture

  2. PATENT-dfmm : Objective The NoE Patent-DfMM aims to establish a collaborative team to provide European industry with support in the field of "Design for Micro and Nano Manufacture (DfMM)" to ensure that problems affecting the manufacture and reliability of products based on micro nano technologies (MNT) can be addressed before prototype and pre-production.

  3. PATENT-dfmm : Mission • •Re-structure the European DfMM Community • by creating new collaborative virtual laboratories • providing industrial services in : • °Design-for-test engineering° Reliability and characterisation engineering°Packaging engineering°Modelling and simulation technology

  4. PATENT-dfmm : Mission… • Create a commercial industrial support service in DfMM technology • Accelerate the output of trained professionals in DfMM engineering • Network keyequipment facilities and improve academic and commercial access to core capabilities

  5. PATENT-dfmm : Technical Overview…

  6. …PATENT-dfmm : Technical Overview

  7. PATENT-dfmm : Organization

  8. PATENT-dfmm : WP1 “Design for Test”… Task force on Design for Testability of Micro- and Nano-Systems (MNS) intends to establish itself as a virtual lab with a recognized expertise in the field. Everything that may improve testability of a MNS by an action during its entire lifecycle will be considered. This includes design,developmentandin-servicetest.

  9. PATENT-dfmm : …WP1 “Design for Test” The task force is composed of 20 European researchers fromsix European organisationsand is organized in working groups that tackles most of the problems in MNS test engineering. Examples: Cost of external test stimuli Cost of specification-based tests Impact of packaging on test costs Nanosystem specificities Low-cost test methodologies

  10. PATENT-dfmm : WP2 “Modelling&Simulation” The aim of the modelling and simulation workpackage is to support the process of robust design, packaging and assembly of the next generation of micro and nano technology based products. WP2 will establish a collaborative service to industry in the form of a virtual lab. WP2 is working closely with the other technical workpackages to address the main research challenges in DfMM.

  11. PATENT-dfmm : WP2 “Modelling&Simulation” • The workapackage team includes researchers from • 14 European Institutes. The research challenges to be • addressed by the partners during theproject include: • - Multi-scale and multi physics modelling • - Enabling accurate packaging and system simulation • - Non-linear behaviour prediction • - Microfluidics modelling • -Failure and degradation mode modelling • Definition of a new cross domain simulation • methodology

  12. PATENT-dfmm : WP3 “Reliability&Characterization” The objective of the Reliability & Characterisation Task Force is to increase awareness of reliability issues amongst designers, and assist them in integrating “design for reliability” techniques into their design flow. This will be achieved by providing information on material properties, failure modes, reliability test modules, sensitive design rules, reliability prediction models, and on the effect of packaging on reliability. Objectives are also to spread knowledge amongst partners and make instrumentation accessible.

  13. PATENT-dfmm : WP4 “Package Engineering” The Package Engineering Task Force aims to link the physical domains of micro nano structure design and package design in terms of engineering issues, such as Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA), procedures for reducing impact of stress and environment, and stress and assembly process monitors. Methods of low-cost testing for integrity utilising in-systems functions together with methods of modelling a package-environment-device interaction need to be taken into account.

  14. PATENT-dfmm : WP5 “Training & Education” PATENT aims to create a European training hub whose stakeholders will be PATENT partners. The portfolio will consist of a cross-institute MSc programme together with CPD courses and a facilities access programme. The training activity will be funded to resource partners to prepare, optimise and integrate training material into high-value offerings. The programme will be structured to provide added value to providers and clients, attract high student and delegate numbers and hence maximise revenue stream to partners (and maximise access to students). This collaborative structure aims to deliver to partners the optimal Commercialisation route for their skills, and professional coordination of training IP.

  15. PATENT-dfmm : WP6 “Networking & Dissemination”… The objectives of the Dissemination and Networking task force (WP6) are to market the project's "virtual laboratory" services and to get feedback on industry's needs for these services. The project's objectives, work plan, and achievements need to be (constantly) communicated, discussed, and reflected with users of the Virtual Laboratory Services.PATENT-DfMM is working closely with other groups to coordinate research and services in DfMM. A first workshop had been organised together with the NEXUS Methodology Working Group "Design Modelling Simulation (MWG DMS)" at DTIP (link to http://tima.imag.fr/conferences/dtip/DTIP2004) in Montreux on 11 May 2004. Close cooperation with MEMS Industry Group in the USA and their METRIC 2004 conference is also planned.

  16. PATENT-dfmm : …WP6 “Networking & Dissemination” PATENT-DfMM has set up an Industry Advisory Board, which is coordinated through WP6 in close cooperation with the project coordinator. PATENT-DfMM has established the National Institute for R&D in Microtechnologies (IMT), Bucharest, Romania as a special point of contact to the Eastern countries within WP6. IMT has the task to support the Management Board in addressing partners in the new EU member states and the ACC, especially with dissemination, training, and networking activities. The special needs of users of PATENT-DfMM services in the East will also be identified and taken care of.

  17. PATENT-dfmm : WP7 “Business Development” The project aims to initiate integration and growth in DfMM skills and capability, however, the long-term objective is to set-up a financially sustainable organisation that provides a DfMM service to European Industry. This workpackage is responsible for pulling together the project results and utilising these results to establish the service. The actions that are covered by this activity are therefore:1. The maintanance of a skills and resources database that identifies the key technology providers, equipment and skills together with modes of access.2. The compilation of a rolling buisness plan over the course of the project based on market needs, visits to partner institutes and feedback from the IAB.3. The maintanance of a grant scheme to fund activities that can clearly contribute to this buisness plan.4. Providing business development support to the virtual laboratories in each technical area of PATENT-DfMM5. Summerising integration achieved and identifying new integration opportunities.

  18. PATENT-dfmm : WP8 “Project Management” The project is coordinated by Lancaster University and managed by a board who's constitution comprises of the workpackage leaders and the chair of the Industrial Advisory Board. This board makes final decisions on funding allocations through a requisition process. The board members / workpackage Leaders are elected on an annual basis by the project assembly that consists of representatives of all project partners
