Criteria for Broadcast News • Timeliness is emphasized • Information is more valuable than explanation • Emphasize what and where • Emphasize news that has audio or visual impact • People are more important than concepts • Find a problem, find a person that has that problem, and tell us how he or she is doing

  3. Emphasize Immediacy • Use present tense verbs • You can and should use today • If you past tense verb, include time element • Use the latest information

  4. Write Tight and Clearly • Remember, a listener can't reread copy • Stories should be no longer than 150 words • Keep sentences short • Don't be afraid to repeat words or phrases • Double or triple space your copy

  5. Use a Conversational Style • Use transitive verbs in active voice • A transitive verb is a verb that requires both a direct subject and one or more objects • Contractions are OK • Start with attribution • Don’t use quotes in text copy

Broadcast Tips • If a name is difficult, spell it out in parenthesis • Example Weinburger is (WINE BURGER) • Put titles before names and keep them short • The university vice chancellor for institutional research services becomes a university administrator • You can say a hospital spokesman • Use people’s names the way they are commonly referred

  7. Broadcast Tips • Round off numbers • Don't use symbols of any kind • Use st, nd, rd and th after dates • Keep stats to a minimum • Avoid acronyms • Write out thousand, million, etc. – Don't use dollar sign • Write out number if it makes it more clear, 15-hundred, sted 1,500.
