San Ramon - Background • Contra Costa County – SF Bay Area • 19,500 single-family homes • 6,200 multi-family units • 25 miles from HHW facility in Martinez • 4% participation in HHW facility • County average = 15% participation • Annual collection event = 2% participation • Direct cost to City of $65,000 per year for facility and event

  3. DOOR-TO-DOOR HHW • Implemented June, 2011 • Sole source contract with WM Curbside • Initial contract expired July 2012 • Extended through September, 2016 • Door-to-Door replaced annual HHW event • Renegotiated contract with HHW facility • Cost savings of $40,000 per year • Direct cost of $60,000 per year for door-to-door program

  5. Materials Accepted Household Hazardous Waste Universal Waste Needles

Exceptions • Commercial customers excluded • Waste in containers larger than five gallons • Radioactive, biological (except sharps), medicines, explosives, ammunition, unlabeled, leaking items • Collection of just one item i.e., small bag of batteries (encouraged to have more items) • No more than 5 auto batteries or fluorescent bulbs per pick-up

  13. Revised Statistics • At $0.74 per household per month, with no increase in lbs collected or participation: • $2.77 per lb • $154 per collection
