  2. James Meredith Sept. 1962, tries to enroll in ‘Ole Miss’ with help of Medgar Evers wins Fed. Court case to get University to desegregate Gov. Barnett doesn’t want to Federal Marshalls sent to protect Meredith riots break out – 160 injured; 2 dead JFK uses television to address people ‘welcome to disagree with law, but not to disobey law’ 1963 Evers shot on front doorstep; Meredith shot and almost killed in 1966

Birmingham MLK and SCLC target the most segregated city – Birmingham, AL stage sit-ins and protest marches city officials get court order to prohibit demonstrations King joins demonstration anyway and is arrested After arrest, King and others step up marches ‘Bull’ Conner – Public Safety Commissioner has had enough Uses dogs and firehouses – photos shock America – demand White House act Kennedy delivers address calling civil rights a moral issue Sends bill to Congress – Bobby leads the charge

  4. March On washington In an attempt to pressure Congress to pass bill several groups (NAACP, SCLC, SNCC, etc.) join together to march on D.C. Aug. 1963, more than 200,000 show up Speaking at the Lincoln Memorial, MLK gives his famous ‘I Have a Dream’ speech earlier version had been delivered in Detroit

Other events Sept., 1963, Bomb explodes at 16th St. Baptist Church in Birmingham – 4 young girls killed in bombing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q-MuWDsv5pg Johnson, to the surprise of everyone, pushes for passage of Civil Rights Bill to honor JFK’s memory uses skill to get it thru – Southern Dems tried to use filibuster to block it – goes for 80 days

  6. Civil Rights Act of 1964 Passes in July Bans segregation in public areas; Fed. Gov. given power to compel state and local school boards to desegregate; Justice Dept (Bobby) given power to prosecute individuals who violate people’s civil rights and outlawed discrimination in employment; establishes the EEOC (Equal Employment Opportunity Commission) to enforce and investigate issues of job discrimination
