The NSBE General Body Meeting on January 14, 2010, commenced at 7:30 p.m. with an opening prayer led by Ms. Renee Gordon. The meeting featured an icebreaker activity focusing on teamwork and communication. Members discussed NSBE's mission to increase the number of culturally responsible Black engineers. A significant portion was dedicated to Black History, highlighting Haiti's unique history. The meeting also addressed upcoming events, scholarships, and leadership opportunities within the chapter. Members were encouraged to prepare for upcoming conventions and career fairs.

BLACK HISTORY: HAITI • Creole- and French-speaking Carribbean country • Port-au-Prince is capital • First post-colonial independent black-led nation in the world; second oldest independent nation in Western hemisphere • The only nation whose independence was gained from a successful slave rebellion in 1791 • Toussaint L’Ouverture took over and wrote a constitution
BLACK HISTORY: HAITI • Has a long history of dictators until 1990 when Haiti’s first free election was held • 80% of its 9 million residents live in poverty • Stagnant economic development due to generations of political and social unrest • Catastrophic 7.0/10.0 earthquake with 14 recorded aftershocks between 5.0 & 5.9 on Tuesday, January 12th
