  3. Prerequisites for the development of telemedicine • Geographic and demographic features • Development of the telecommunication infrastructure • Kazakhstan’sExperience in EC IST projects implementation • (DENEMA, TeleInVivo) • Business interest in the telemedicine projects

Telecommunications infrastructure • • About 300 private operators • • All communication channels – 67 500 000 channels*km • • Telephony - 14 numbers /100 inhabitants • • Mobile telephony - 5,4 phones / 100 inhabitants • • Internet - 4 users / 100 inhabitants • • Fiber backbone – 5 000 km, including TAE – 1 750 km • • Satellite Telecommunications • • Digital TV broadcasting

Kazakhstan in IST projects DENEMA - Telematics Application Program, 1997-1999 The mission of this project: creation conditions for establishing and development of direct contacts between healthcare workers in Central Asian countries DENEMA was focused on • Adopting new information technologies in fields of distance learning, telemedicine, electronic commerce through Central Asia Region • Connecting Central Asia Region to World Information Society • Testing and adaptation telematics products through Central Asia • Supplying hottest information about Central Asia telematics market Participants: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan,Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan

  6. TeleInVivo in Kazakhstan The aim of this project was to setup a transportable telemedicine workstation for the purposes of remote diagnostics seances via telecommunication channels. Telemedicine Network includes: • Almaty Regional Medical Diagnostic and Consulting Centre • Aral Central Local Hospital (Aral CLH) • Hospital in Coimbra (Portugal) • Telecommunication Centre in Almaty (KATELCO)

Results of the IST experience • Both projects - DENEMA and TeleInvivo were successful • Real experience in the realization of the telemedicine projects • Testing telecommunication ability for telemedicine purpose • Testing ability of the satellite and ground channels • Prerequisites for the development of telemedicine in Central Asia region

ONGOING INITIATIVES • Goal: • Creation of the special Medical Informational TV satellite channelfor implementation of healthy lifestyle all over the Kazakhstan • Technologies: • TV broadcasting • Internet applications • Consortia: • Intel • Katelco • Medinform • National Center for Problems of Healthy lifestyle development
