He received a lung transplant after 3 years of being on the list This lecture, presented by Len, was the story of his battle with this devastating disease, his recovery and the friendship he formed with the parents of the little girl that made it possible for him to live when she no longer could Alpha-1 Antitrypsin DeficiencyA Real Patients PerspectivePresented by Len Geiger A 14-year-old girl named Korinne was the donor of the lungs that Len received. Her organs ended up saving the lives of 4 other people. Len carries a picture of Korinne with him at all times and communicates regularly with her family. He has a daughter named after Korinne.

Therapeutic Hypothermia Student Case StudyPresent by: Brenda McComb and Tami Blakemore • This was an actual patient we encounter during our adult critical care rotation • Hypothermia is being used for cardiovascular and neurologic protection post cardiac arrest on patients with a return of spontaneous circulation • Patient cooled to 33 C for 24 hrs. • Kept on mechanical ventilation during induced hypothermia • Re-warmed slowly over 8 hrs. • Normal body temperature reached neurologic testing is done. • Studies show positive outcomes when used This was the first time that the students were invited to present at the MSRC Conference. We were very proud of Brenda and Tami who took this on and did a fantastic job!

In Summary • 1st and 2nd year students attended several lectures for which they will be doing class assignments • We had 7 teams that competed in the Sputum Bowl (3 – 1st year teams, 3 – 2nd year teams, an instructor team) • Had a positive interaction with students from other respiratory programs • These conferences give us the opportunity to stay current on different legislative goals • To stay active members of the AARC and MSRC • To become more involved and help make changes that will enhance the profession of respiratory therapy Our thanks to the CLEF committee for providing us with the means and funds for attending the MSRC 2011 Spring Conference, and as you know, we had----
