  1. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? (Q.3)

  2. Bauer Media Group • Bauer’s two main brands are the music magazines; Kerrang! and Q. • Worldwide circulation of Bauer’s magazine titles amounts to 38 million magazines a week. • This media group are more likely to produce my magazine because: • They produce two of the biggest names in rock magazines. • This makes it similar to my product. • Ways in which they advertise: • Through TV (Kerrang! Channel) • YouTube • Magazines • Social Networking

  3. Ways My Magazine Would be Published • My product would be produced in many different formats: • App (digital copy) • Paper magazine (shops) • Internet (downloadable) • As they already produce popular magazines (Kerrang!) they are likely to promote my magazine perfectly to the target audience my product has been created for. • To reach the audience they are likely to: • Advertise in their magazines of the same genre, • Place advertisements on YouTube, specifically on a video in the genre, • Advertise of social media, such as Facebookand Twitter. • This will help the saleability to the magazine as they are aiming it at the fans they already have within the rock genre.

  4. Who would be the audience for your media product? (Q.4)

  5. Socio-Economic Group • My magazine is aimed at the socio-economic group E as it’s aimed more to the young rock fans within the ages of 16 -25. • However this may vary if a band / artist that is featured within the magazine, it may attract people from different groups. • As my magazine doesn’t have a specific sub-genre it could also attract many of the other groups (mostly D & C2) as the magazine could feature bands such as AC/DC and Black Sabbath which have an older fan base due to when the bands came out.

  6. Young and Rubicam’s • My magazine, especially it being a special Halloween edition; is mainly aimed towards reformers. • Most rock fans like to define themselves as ‘non-conformers’ and have their own unique image which would make them reformers • However, my magazine will also attract to mainstreamers of rock as they like to belong to the ‘rock’ group and genre.

  7. Rock Fans • As my magazine is in the rock genre I have followed with the same generic conventions as many other rock magazines follow. • Colour scheme: reds, blacks, whites and for my magazine I have included orange as it is a Halloween edition. • Bold, sans serif fonts. • Eye catching images and band images/names. • My magazine is in the rock genre however, I have not chosen a sub-genre as it’s a special edition. I have done this as it will create larger profits so it is aimed at your ‘average’ rock fan. • Dark, outrageous and rebellious – helps with the Halloween theme. • Break traditions. • Seen in the pictures below.

  8. Gender • Most rock magazines are aimed more at men with their dark conations and male images however I have aimed my more towards both male and female. I have done this by: • The main image of a female. • Use of page furniture. • Serif and sans-serif text. • Bands that attract both male and female audiences. • Calm colours – not really dark, more subtle tones. • This is done to make a more equal audience making it more marketable in stores as it will attract both genders and remains within the rock spectrum. However it has meant breaking many generic conventions. • Not using a band or male on the cover. • More white than black. • Use of paler oranges and reds.

  9. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product? (Q.6)

  10. What I’ve Learnt/Used • Photoshop: • Was my first time using Photoshop • Learnt how to use all the features to make my magazine cover (e.g. Placing text on the page and placing the image in the correct space) • This use of technology is important to publishers of magazines because each step they need to be perfect and Photoshop can make these steps seem simple by hiding layers and moving them around. • Tip – Make sure you picture fits into the frame when your masthead is in place to the modal or image isn’t being chopped of by the masthead you are using (layers). • In Design: • Was my first time using In Design • All features were knew to me, so had to learn them all. • I found In Design a good programme but very complex and hard to place images into the page. • Tip – If you want to have a coloured background which I have for my double-page spread, make sure you have all your text or text boxes in place beforehand as I was unable to create a textbox over the coloured background. • Wordpress: • Wordpress was a quick thing to catch on to as it’s simple to use. • It is a good way to get work straight on to the internet. • Tip – You can rescale images and add more to your post by going into your dashboard and onto the post and clicking add media.

  11. What I’ve Learnt/Used • PowerPoint: • As I have previously used PowerPoint for many other subjects, I had a basic knowledge of how to use everything. • This is a good tool that media companies can/do use for presentations as you can add many different media products to the page. • Tip – Go to the main file button and onto options – popular and then tick the developer tool to show in ribbon bar, this helps to add videos into PowerPoint presentations. • Publisher: • I used publisher to annotate my magazine for my evaluation. • I find publisher a good tool to use as it’s easy to move things around and create the border you want. • My tip for this is to use it when needing to annotate a piece of work. • iMessage: • iMessage is another form technology I used but this was for contacting my model. • This is a quick way to organise venue, costume and people for your shoot. • TIPS: • My biggest tip is to constantly save your files so if something happens and the computer went of, you have that work saved. • Also back your work up – send an email to yourself or use a memory stick. • Ask friends/family for advise on what they think of your work. • Spell-check and prove read all of your magazine pages to make sure of no mistakes.
