  3. What about them? • What does each scene tell us about the different suitors? • How does Portia react to each of the suitors? What does this tell us about Portia? • What does each of the scrolls say? What do they tell us about how Portia’s father felt about her?

  4. Mood and tone • There is a kind of fairy tale atmosphere in the casket scenes. Usually this kind of contest would have some kind of moral and the best man wins. • Is there a moral behind this contest? If so, what is it? • Does the best man win or is he just the better of the options? Justify your answer.
