Library Initiative at P.S. 18 Presented by Maryanna Crawford, Librarian and Media Specialist
What is the Library Initiative? • It’s intention is to redesign the elementary school libraries in New York City elementary schools. • It’s intention is to increase the level of reading scores of the children in New York City. • It’s intention is to enable children to have wonderful books and up to date technology in their school libraries.
Who do we thank? • The Board of Education of the City of New York • The Robin Hood Foundation • The New York City Council • District 31 • All the contributors to the Initiative, including Scholastic, Follett Library Resources, Apple Computers, DelleValle and Bernheim Architects • The selected professionals who contributed to the librarian training • Syracuse University
How will the initiative do this? • By creating state of the art libraries. • By hiring inventive architects to design the spaces. • By filling the libraries with thousands of new books. • By training librarians in the new technology.
Why was P.S. 18 chosen? • They had a principal willing to work with the Initiative. • They had the space to create a new library. • They had a needy population. • They had a fabulous teacher who wanted to be part of the project.
How will the new library be used? • Children and teachers will use the library on a flexible schedule. • Librarians will instruct using the latest in technology. • Librarian will be a real librarian, not a prep teacher! • More than one class can use the library at the same time because of the library design. • Librarian will collaborate with classroom teachers in designing lessons to be taught using the library.
