  6. The “BIG ONE” • 50 times largerthan the 1994 Northridge Quake (>7.8 vs 6.7) • >1800 fatalities(vs72) • >53,000 injured(vs >9,000) • ½ million people homeless • $100-200 billion property damage (vs $20 billion) US Geological Survey

  7. We must be prepared to take care of ourselves – for 7 days! • 1994: 104 LA City fire stationsmaxed out in the first 5 minutes. • Freeways, roads, supply routes impassable • Power out; gas probably out • Phones out (cell phones and email?) • Water probably out (or contaminated) • Hospitals overwhelmed, reduced capacity, or out altogether.

  8. >Katrinais coming to Southern California • (1162 killed, $100 billion damage)!

  9. Good News! • How well a community comes through a disaster is directly related to people’s prior preparation and how effectively they work together in time of need. • It’s better to HAVE a plan you DON’TNEEDthan to NEED a plan you DON’T HAVE!

  10. Why Prepare? • Lessens our anxiety so that we can think more clearly before, during, and after a disaster. • Reduces our misery during the days following the disaster. • Reduces the possibility of serious injury. • Gives us a head start on recovery. • Protects against possible civil unrest. • Enables us to help others.
