  2. Relation to media.. Tapscott and Williams wrote a book published in December 2006 called ‘Wikinomics: How Mass Collaboration Changes Everything’. The book aims to explore how some companies in the early 21st century have used mass collaboration and various technology, (such a wikis) to become more successful. Tapscott and Williams alsocame up with the term ‘prosumer’ which is a combination of the words ‘producer’ and ‘consumer’. Previously, consumers would simply take in all the media that was produced for them. However this modern term suggests that producers now also consume the media too.

Book summary… Brief summary The book is based on a $9 million research project leading to the conclusion that billions of connected individuals can now actively take part in coming up with new, and intelligent ideas alongside wealth creation and social development in ways we never thought we could accomplish. ‘Wikinomics’ suggests that in order for companies to succeed, leaders must think of unique strategies about how to compete and be profitable. Furthermore companies are required to embrace a new art and science of collaboration- this is what the authors call “wikinomics.” This concept surrounds deep changes in the structure of how we cooperate and our economy which is due to new competitive principles such as openness, peering, sharing and acting globally. Tapscott and Williams refer to MySpace, Flickr and YouTube ect as collaborative enterprises. They also offer examples of this collaboration and self-organization by referring to companies such as BMW, Procter & Gamble ect. The companies have used the technique to cut costs, innovate faster and co-create with customers and partners.
