  2. Success in Writing--Verbs • Each item on the GED Language Arts, Writing Test will consist of one or more sentences. • Sentences must have a subject, a verb, a capital letter to start, and end punctuation, usually a period.

  4. Success in Writing--Verbs • Clauses are almost like sentences, but be careful—they may not be a whole sentence. They have subjects and verbs. • Subordinate clause: If the rain stops, we can play outside. rain/stops • Independent clauses: Johnna is going to pick me up after school, and we will go to the mall. Johnna/is going we/will go

  6. Success in Writing--Verbs Since all sentences contain verbs, you want to check the verb in each item. • Verbs must be • Correct tense (present, past…) • In number agreement (singular or plural)

  7. Present Tense is happening right now, or something that happens all of the time You are doing a good job. He is my friend. John can really jump. Past Tense is something that has already happened Jack was my best friend in the third grade. You finished on time. Success in Writing--Verbs

  8. Success in Writing--Verbs • You need to be able to locate the verb. • Verbs may show action: run, leap, think, or write, something a person can do. • Some verbs are forms of be: are, is, am, or were.

  9. Success in Writing--Verbs • Some sentences contain one word verbs: Lucy talks all the time. Who made your uniform? Jimmy ran to tell about the fire. Mr. Johnson is a fair teacher.

  10. Success in Writing--Verbs • Other sentences have two or more words as part of their verb (or predicate). We can go swimming after work. You are going to be a great leader. In October he will have served three terms as Jaycee president. Who is coming to see us?

  11. Success in Writing--Verbs • Each verb must agree in number with its subject, which usually comes before the verb. • If the verb consists of two or more words, the first helping verb must agree.

  13. Success in Writing--Verbs • Time is very important on your test. Be aware of your time, and do not stay on one question too long. • If you practice in class being timed, that will help you on the GED test.
