  8. Entry • 1. Direct entry into Medical degree - direct from school with IB, start medical training • 2. Graduate entry - enter after gaining a bachelors degree. Graduate entry is a 4 year programme • The Foundation programmeis designed for students who have demonstrated high academic potential but who do not meet the specific subject requirements for entry to the five year medical programme i.e. those who have non-science subjects or a combination including no more than one of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. • Cardiff, Bristol, Dundee, Keele, Manchester, Sheffield, Southampton, East Anglia

The 5th UCAS course • Biomedical Sciences • St George’s is at the forefront of interdisciplinary approaches to education for a huge selection of health professions, research, and clinical laboratory careers. The course will provide you with an excellent opportunity to obtain a first degree in the sciences related to medicine. You may then choose to progress into a career in medicine, enter into a research career, or specialise in areas such as forensic medicine, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, clinical trials coordination or biomedical product marketing.

  13. UKCAT and BMAT • You must take your UKCAT before August 31st so that you can then apply to universities where you have enough points. • BMAT is only offered once. • (1st week in November)

UKCAT • Verbal reasoning - assesses candidates' ability to think logically about written information and to arrive at a reasoned conclusion. • Quantitative reasoning- assesses candidates' ability to solve numerical problems. • Abstract reasoning- assesses candidates' ability to infer relationships from information by convergent and divergent thinking. • Decision analysis- assesses candidates' ability to deal with various forms of information, to infer relationships, to make informed judgements, and to decide on an appropriate response, in situations of complexity and ambiguity. • Non-cognitive analysis- identifies the attributes and characteristics of robustness, empathy and integrity that may contribute to successful health professional practice.

  24. Medical degree (usually 5 years) • The undergraduate course provides students with exposure to the different specialitieswithin medicine. It involves basic medical sciences and practical clinical tasks, and seeks to develop attitudes and behaviours appropriate to the medical profession, as well as the skills of independent learning.

Foundation year 1 • Newly qualified graduates from medical school receive provisional registration from the General Medical Council (GMC) and undertake foundation year 1 (F1) which is designed to build on the knowledge and skills gained during undergraduate training. On successful completion of F1, trainees receive full registration with the GMC and can continue to the second year of foundation training.

  26. Foundation year 2 • Foundation year 2 (F2) training continues the general training in medicine and involves a range of different specialties, which could include general practice. By the end of foundation training, trainees must demonstrate that they are competent in areas such as managing acutely ill patients, team working and communication skills, to continue training in their chosen specialist area or in general practice.
