  1. CONTEMPORARY MEDICINE VS ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE BY: Jean Ang (16) Chong Kai Ling (9)

  2. Research Question Western/ Contemporary medicine is more effective than traditional medicine. Do you agree?’

  3. Definitions Contemporary medicine • applies health science, biomedical research, and medical technology to diagnose and treat injury and disease, typically through medication or surgery, but also through therapies as diverse as psychotherapy, external splints & traction, prostheses, biologics, ionizing radiation and others. Alternative medicine • healthcare and treatment practices, including traditional Chinese medicine, chiropractic, folk medicine, and naturopathy, that minimize or eschew the use of surgery and drugs. Effective • Successful in producing a desired or intended result.

  4. Alternative medicine: • Proven that people live longer • More affordable • Altered to patient’s conditions • Less load on the body

  5. Care for Patients well-being • Ask if the patient have any allergies before prescription • Ensures no adverse reactions after consuming the medicine

  6. Less Load on Body • Drugs and chemicals used in contemporary medicine may cause patient to react negatively • Patients may become more sick

  7. Contemporary medicines serve as health hazards • chemotherapy, • cost of eight weeks of chemotherapy can range from $100 to $30,000, • cases where chemotherapy damages healthy cells, accelerating the growth of cancer tumours. • causing more cancer in the following years.

  8. Affordable Treatment • USD$40-$60 an hour, even consultations regarding the common flu. • consultations may or may not contain discussions regarding treatments that would actually help the patients. • Traditional Chinese consultations costs around $12, • Cost can be changed. May be cheaper

  9. Counter Argument: • Government subsidies • Medical insurance to cover for medical fees. • These privileges are only applicable to contemporary treatment

  10. Affordable Treatment (continued) • Patients spend money on contemporary medicines because they have not heard of types of alternative medicines • In a survey, almost 60% of the participants did not know that alternative medicines existed and could be successful, • People unknowingly spend more money on contemporary treatments

  11. Counter Argument: • Chemicals and drugs have undergone research and testing • scientifically proven unlike the herbs used in contemporary medicine

  12. Specifically altered • Physicians mix medicine according to patient’s sickness • More precise • Contemporary medicine is made for the general public

  13. Physician making a remedy

  14. Different types of Chinese herbs that contain medicinal value and healing abilities

  15. Conclusion: Therefore, we feel that contemporary medicine is not more effective than alternative medicine
