  1. Welcome Back! Please enter quietly and have a seat in your assigned seat. How many of the questions can you answer correctly? What is a reference point? An object that appears to stay in place What is the difference between velocity and speed? Velocity has direction. What is a force? Any push or pull force – measured in Newtons.

  2. Review the rules. • Enter the room quietly. • Sit in your assigned seat – don’t visit. • Copy the warm-up down in your IAN. • The bell is your cue that we’re starting class. • Be on time otherwise you're late. • Class Dismissal – stand up, push your chair in, and exit through back door.

  3. Set up your IAN You need a new science notebook for this semester. No new notebook? Use notebook paper and a specific notebook. 1. From the back, count and number front/back pages to 25. 2. Write your name on the front cover. On the inside front page, make a Table of Contents page * Fold paper in half - make a vertical fold. * Label the paper “Table of Contents” * Number the lines on both sides of the column. 4. Number the pages in your IAN front/back: 2 - 40

  4. New Standard Write the new standard on page 3 of your IAN. S8P3.c. Demonstrate the effect of simple machines (lever, inclined plane, pulley, wedge, screw, and wheel and axle) on work.

  5. MYP QUESTION: How do machines make work easier? AoI: Human Ingenuity IB Learners: Thinker, Open-Minded

  6. Opening • Select the activities that require the least amount of work. • carrying heavy books home • reading a 300-page novel • skiing for 1 hour • lifting a 45 kg mass • holding a steel beam in place for 3 • hours • jacking up a car

  7. What is work? Work is done on an object if: • a force causes an object to move • object moves in the direction of the force.

  8. Work or Not Work?

  9. Calculating Work W = F x d Work = Force (N) x Distance (m) Newton-Meter = Joule (J)

  10. What is a machine? A device that makes work easier by changing the size or direction of a force.

  11. How does the inclined plane help the man? Changes the size of the force AND the distance. (careful, not the same as direction) 2) When one increases, the other decreases.

  12. OUTPUT is done BY a machine. INPUT is done ON a machine.

  13. What’s the difference between work and force? Applying a force doesn’t always result in work being done.

  14. Closing - Lever How can I move the clown?
