  1. Research Make note of the following practices regarding research and acquiring sources and information for products.

  2. Acquiring Sources • The purpose of research is to consult numerous reliable, unbiased sources, quote and or paraphrase the information from those sources to support an argument established by your thesis or purpose. • Synthesizing the information from all sources is the most effective way to support your thesis or purpose.

  3. What are Source Cards? • Source cards are 3x5 notecards that contain the publication information for the sources that you as a research team (or individual) chose to use in your product or argument.

  4. Required Information on a Source Card Source number – A number (1, 2, 3…) is assigned to each source used 1 "Snapshots: How Changes in Medical Technology Affect Health Care Costs." The Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation - Health Policy, Media Resources, Public Health Education & South Africa - Kaiser Family Foundation. The Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation, Mar. 2007. Web. 23 Jan. 2012. MLA Formatted publication information on source

  5. Note Cards • Note cards contain a single piece of information, that has been either paraphrased or quoted, obtained from a given source. • In addition to the note on the card, the note card has two special features: a source number which corresponds to the source from which the information came and a slug. Corresponding source number slug Preventative Technologies 1 “Preventative technologies have increased ten times in practice over the past ten years.” Note

  6. What Is a Slug? • A “slug” in research language is a more generalized topic of the information (or note) on the card. • If I were outlining the presentation or paper, whatever the end product is, the slugs would be the areas to be discussed or covered in the content of my product.

  7. In the case of this outline, my main slugs might be the Roman numerals and my subslugs might be the A’s and B’s and/or the 1’s 2’s and 3’s

  8. What About Slugs? Ideal • In any case, you will have multiple notes that fall under the same slug. The notes will even come from different sources. • The Ultimate goal is to have your different source cards have note cards representing many of the topics (or slugs) of your presentation. Source Card 1 Slug A 1 Slug A 1 Slug A 1 Slug B 1 Note cards from source 1 Slug B 1 Slug C 1

  9. Synthesizing For the Final Product In order to correctly synthesize the information for your product, you must arrange your cards according to slugs. Ideally, each slug should have note cards from a variety of sources.
