  1. Chemical Reactions Continued 10.01 & 10.02 Chemistry Ms. Boon

  2. Catalyst • Pick up a new Daily Work Organizer. • Find your new seat. • Record your goal for the week. • Catalyst: • The three subatomic particles that make up an atom are protons, neutrons, and electrons. Protons are positively charged and are in the nucleus of the atom with the neutral neutrons. Protons determine the physical properties of an atom. Electrons are negatively charged. Electrons are tiny, fast moving particles that swirl around the nucleus in the electron cloud. They determine the chemical reactivity of an atom. • Are you more like a proton, neutron, or electron? Why?

  3. Objectives I can describe chemical reactions by writing balanced chemical equations. I can make calculations involving moles.

  4. Agenda • Catalyst (10) • Benchmark #1 (40-50) • Chemical Reaction Close Reading Activity – You choose! (30-40) • Article 1: Green Fuels • Article 2: Chemistry of Marathon Running • Class Meeting (10-15)

  5. Chemical Reactions Reading Pick up an article and questions at the back of class. Answer all the questions on a separate sheet of paper. Make careful calculations! These questions will be graded. If you need help, raise your hand. If you would like to use a chemistry book, pick one up at the back of class. When everyone is done with the benchmark, we will pause and review the calculations together.

  6. Mole Mini Review • Types of Questions: • Convert from # particles to # moles. • Convert from # moles to # particles. • Find the molar mass of a compound. • When given the molar mass, convert from # grams to # moles. • When given the molar mass, convert from # moles to # grams. Think, Pair, Share: Compare the question types. Can some of these be grouped together? Which ones?

  7. Strategies for solving word problems Identify what the question is asking. Identify what information is given. Identify what information is missing. Set up your equation. Solve. Check your answer.

  8. Practice Problem 1 • 4.2 mol x 6.02 x 1023 molecules 1 mol Answer: 25.3 x 1023 molecules acetic acid Convert to scientific notation: 2.5 x 1023 molecules acetic acid • How many molecules are there in 4.2 mol of acetic acid (C2H4O2)? • Question: # molecules in 4.2 mol • Given: I have 4.2 mol acetic acid • Missing: # molecules

  9. Practice Problem 2 • 3.01 x 1020 molecules x ___1 mol____ 6.02 x 1023 molecules Answer: 0.5 x 10-3 moles acetic acid Convert to scientific notation: 5.0 x 10-4 moles acetic acid • You have 3.01 x 1020 molecules of acetic acid (C2H4O2). How many moles of acetic acid do you have? • Question: # moles in 3.01 x 1020 molecules • Given: I have 3.01 x 1020 molecules • Missing: # moles

  10. Practice Problem 3 • What is the molar mass of acetic acid (C2H4O2)? • Question: molar mass • Given: C2H4O2 • Missing: mass of each element • Find the molar mass of each element and multiply by their subscript: • C = 12 x 2 = 24 • H = 1 x 4 = 4 • C = 16 x 2 = 32 • Total molar mass? • 24 + 4 + 32 = 60 g/mol

  11. Practice Problem 4 • 180 g acetic acid x ___1 mol____ 60 g acetic acid Answer: 3 moles acetic acid • You have 180 g acetic acid. How many moles acetic acid do you have? • Question: # moles in 180 g acetic acid • Given: I have 180 g acetic acid • Missing: # moles and molar mass

  12. Practice Problem 5 • 100 mol acetic acid x _60 g acetic acid 1 mol Answer: 6000 g acetic acid Scientific notation: 6.0 x 103 g acetic acid • You have 100 moles acetic acid. How many grams acetic acid do you have? • Question: # grams in 100 moles acetic acid • Given: I have 100 moles acetic acid • Missing: # grams and molar mass

  13. Class Meeting • Benchmark Reflections? • Conservation Blows it Up: Make Up Assignment • Schedule for next few days: • Wednesday: Predicting Chemical Reactions • Thurs/Fri: • Double Bubble Lab • Chemical Reactions and The Mole Quiz #2 • Monday: No school for you! • HW: p. 274 #5, Read p. 275-279; practice problems p. 279 #1 & 2

  14. Conservation Blows it Up: Make Up Assignment • Read pp. 260-267 • Do problems • p. 266 # 1, 3, 5, 11 • p. 274 # 1 • p. 292 # 2, 5, 10, 11, 12
