  1. Types of Chemical Reactions, Continued

  2. Chemistry Joke Q: What are your teacher’s favorite elements? A: C H O Co La Te!

  3. Double Replacement • Ions in two compounds “change partners” • Cation of one compound combines with anion of the other • General Equation: AB + CD  AD + CB

  4. Double Replacement Products One of the compounds formed is usually either: • An insoluble gas that bubbles out of solution • A precipitate • Or, a molecular compound, usually water The other compound is often soluble and remains dissolved in solution.

  5. Double Replacement Example Pb(NO3)2(aq) + K2CrO4(aq)  PbCrO4(s) + 2KNO3(aq) • Note how the ions combine to create neutral products by crossing charges and simplifying. • Then…the equation is balanced.

  6. Acid/Base NeutralizationType of Double Replacement • When an acid reacts with a base, water and a salt are produced. • HCl + K(OH) → H(OH) + KCl • H(OH) is water! (H2O) • KCl is an ionic compound—a salt! Switch Places

  7. Solid or Soluble? When a double replacement reaction forms a SOLID, use the solubility rules on the back of your periodic table to tell which product is solidand which product is soluble. (aq) (s) 3 AgNO3 (aq) + K3PO4 (aq) 3 KNO3 + Ag3PO4 Rules 1 and 5 (aq) (s) 3 (NH4)2S (aq) + 2 AlCl3 (aq) 6 NH4Cl+ Al2S3 Rules 1or 3 and 5

  8. Chemistry Joke Acids and Bases are… pHun!!!
