  1. Grid Control Architecture

  2. Objectives • After completing this lesson, you should be able to do the following: • Describe the Grid Control architecture • List the components of the Grid Control framework • List the types of targets that are manageable by Grid Control • Use the Grid Control console • Describe the possible High Availability configurations

  3. Grid Control Components • Oracle Enterprise Manager 10g Grid Control comprises three major components: • Oracle Management Repository • Oracle Management Service (OMS) • Oracle Management Agent

  4. E-Biz Host AS ……. Oracle Management Services DB Agent Servers Storage Network Software AS OCS E-Biz Database Enterprise Config Management Application Perf Management E-Biz Host AS ……. Precision System Monitoring Administration DB Agent Infrastructure (Jobs, Alerts, and so on) E-Biz Host AS ……. DB Agent Grid Control Components Targets Manage from Anywhere HTTP/S HTML Console HTTP/S Mobile device JDBC HTTP/S HTTP/S Oracle Management Repository Portals Firewall

  5. Managed Targets • Managed targets may include: • Oracle databases • Oracle database listeners • Oracle application servers • Oracle applications • Oracle Collaboration Suite • Oracle E-Business Suite • Most operating systems that are certified to run Oracle products • Third-party products and applications

  6. Oracle Management Agent • Oracle Management Agent: • Must be installed on each managed host • Must be in its own ORACLE_HOME (unless usingNFS-mounted agent) • Communicates with OMS via HTTP or HTTPS

  7. Oracle Management Agent Server A Host target information Oracle Management Service HTTP or HTTPS Oracle Management Agent Third-party Applications JDBC OC4J OC4J OC4J OC4J Web Cache OHS Oracle Management Repository Application servers Listeners Databases

  8. Oracle Management Service • Oracle Management Service (OMS): • Includes member components: • Oracle HTTP Server (OHS) • Oracle Application Server Containers for J2EE (OC4J) • OracleAS Web Cache • Is a J2EE application deployed on Oracle Application Server 10g • Connects to Oracle Management Repository by using Java Database Connectivity

  9. Oracle Management Service Agent Oracle Management Service Agent Agent OracleAS WebCache Oracle HTTP Server OC4J HTTP or HTTPS EM application JDBC Administrator http://omsserver.mycompany.com:7777/em Management Repository

  10. Oracle Management Repository • Oracle Management Repository: • Resides in an Oracle database • Includes schema objects belonging to SYSMAN • Can be installed in a preexisting database • Can be installed in a RAC database

  11. Accessing the Grid Control Console • The Grid Control console may be accessed by any supported browser: • Netscape Navigator 7.2 • Mozilla 1.7 • Firefox 1.0.4 • Safari 1.2 • Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 (SP2) • http://<oms hostname>.<domain>:<port>/em • http://omsserver.mycompany.com:7777/em

  12. Grid Control Console: Home

  13. Grid Control Console: Targets

  14. Grid Control Console: Deployments

  15. Grid Control Console: Alerts

  16. Grid Control Console: Policies

  17. Grid Control Console: Jobs

  18. Grid Control Console: Reports

  19. Grid Control Console: Setup

  20. Grid Control Console: Preferences

  21. Managing Very Large Grids • The Grid Control framework uses the Oracle 10g technology stack. For large grids with many administrators, the Grid Control framework scales well. • Oracle Management Repository can be installed in a Real Application Cluster. • OMS can take advantage of Oracle Application Server 10g clustering.

  22. High Availability Configurations • The architecture for deploying Grid Control in a highly available fashion is based on two key concepts: • Redundancy • Component monitoring

  24. Summary • In this lesson, you should have learned how to: • Describe the Grid Control architecture • List the components of the Grid Control framework • List the types of targets that are manageable by Grid Control • Use the Grid Control console • Describe possible High Availability configurations

  25. Practice 2 Overview: Grid Control Architecture • This practice covers the following topics: • Understanding the Grid Control Architecture • Navigating Grid Control • Grid Control Case Study
