INTAS • Non-profit International Association for the promotion of scientific cooperation between researchers in the NIS & its member states; • 1993: European Community, EU Member States & like minded countries; • Helps preserve scientific potential in the NIS through international cooperation;

Supports multilateral partnerships between research institutes, universities & industry in the NIS and the INTAS member states; Funds fundamental or applied research in all areas of exact, natural and human sciences; Offers grants aimed at enabling scientists to engage in international scientific cooperation with particular focus on young scientists; ACTIONS & POLICY

Submission of project proposals and individual grant applications in the frame of regular calls and selection by peer review on the basis of scientific quality, mutual benefit & socio‑economic relevance; INTAS developed tailor-made, targeted programmes & instruments suited to country-specific needs in post-Soviet science; INTAS developed flexible co-funding arrangements, involving partners both from INTAS member countries and NIS partner countries. In addition to Project grants and Young Scientist Fellowship grants, INTAS: Offers support to Summer Schools & other training activities; Awards Conference Organisation Grants and Conference Individual Grants; Supports small-scale Infrastructure actions; Supports E-library. OTHER SUPPORT ACTIONS

  8. CALLS 1992 - 2005 INTAS launched 74 Calls: • 10 Open Calls for project proposals; • 10 Thematic Calls for project proposals; • 22 Collaborative Calls for project proposals; • 13 Young Scientist Fellowship Calls (incl. 6 joint calls); • 3 Innovation Grant Calls; • 16 other Support Actions.

  9. FUNDING • European Community through the Framework Programme (INternational COoperation) 2002 - 2006 ~70 M Euro • In kind (staff) and financial contributions from some members & • Financial contribution from co-sponsors in jointly funded projects • 2002 – 2006 ~9 M Euro

  10. IMPACT (1992 – 2004) • 253 million Euro provided funding for: • ~ 2,800 research projects & networks; • ~ 15,800 teams of scientists; • ~45 innovation grants; • > 1,200 young scientists fellowships; • 281 conferences & workshops; • 66 summer schools; • 33 infrastructure actions.

COLLABORATIVE CALL « CERN » • Budget: 1,5 M€; • Research related to the design, construction, data acquisition & data processing of experiments to be carried out at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, including the physics of LHC detectors; • 0,5M€ of total budget call is earmarked for research on grids, especially on computer security requirements.

ARAL SEA CALL • Launched: October 2000 in cooperation with CNRS (FR) & DFG (DE); • Support innovative, trans-international & interdisciplinary research projects; • Total budget: 3 million Euros; • 19 projects in 3 fields: * Chemistry; • * Life Sciences; • * Environment. • 4 main topics: * Water and health (8 projects); • * Resources (6 projects); • * Agriculture (3 projects); • * Climate (2 projects). • Results to be used by local, national &/or international development institutions to improve the local population’s life conditions: environmental sustainability, water resources management, health problems & natural resource use in the Aral Sea Basin.

NIF (Kazakhstan) FASIE (Russia) Indicative budget € 250 000 from INTAS € 250 000 from INTAS € 250 000 from NIF € 250 000 from FASIE Maximum project grant: € 50 000 Contractors from Kazakhstan/Russia will receive 50% of the grant out of the contribution of NIF/FASIE respectively. The conditions of the collaborative calls have still to be finally negotiated with the co-funding partners. INTAS Collaborative Call for Innovation Grants

Start of projects: November 2006 The launch of the calls remains subject to the appropriation of funds from the European Union’s Framework Programme. INTAS Calls 2006

CONCLUSION: INTAS ASSETS & ADDED VALUE • Autonomyand simple management structure; • Integrated management of the different activities (projects, fellowships, other support actions; • Tailor-made, targeted programmes & instruments adapted to an evolving context; • Flexibleco-funding arrangements; • In general:Versatility, Responsiveness, & Flexibility. Hopefully these assets will be preserved in the future (FP7).
