  6. Education • He was going to University of Wisconsin • Transferred to the Naval Academy at Annapolis • US Test Pilot School

  7. Space Missions • A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Lovell manned several pre-moon missions, including Gemini 7. Lovell's incredible leadership in saving Apollo 13, by changing the spaceship's course mid-flight, has made him a hero in space exploration.

  8. Famous • Jim Lovell is a veteran of four space flights and very nearly became the fifth man to walk on the moon. • In December 1968, Lovell went into space on Apollo 8 with crewmates Neil Armstrong and Aldrin. This flight, which lasted just over six days, was the first piloted flight around the moon.

NASA-National Aeronautics and Space Administration • He has since served as backup pilot for the Gemini 4 flight and backup Commander for the Gemini 9 flight, as well as backup Commander to Neil Armstrong for the Apollo 11 lunar landing mission. • Is the agency of the United States government that is responsible for the nation's civilian space program and for aeronautics and aerospace research.

  10. Other Interesting Facts • The crew of Apollo 8 became the first humans to view the Earth from space and to see the back side of the moon. None could have guessed at the time that Lovell would be the only man among them never to feel the lunar surface under his feet. • In May 1971, Lovell was named deputy director for science and applications at the Johnson Space Center in Houston.
