  1. Search, Discovery and Delivery for Electronic Resources SELL - Porto – June 2011

  2. Outline • B-on’s service today • First Impressions of new service • Main issues • Next Steps

  3. B-on’s service today • In production since 2004 • Based on federated search (Metalib): • Real time search in several “live” databases; • Search time limited by the slowest database; • The number of user interactions until reaching the desired information is often high and requires navigation in more than one interface. • We have frequent complaints by our users.

  4. B-on’s service today • We have ONE Metalib/SFX consortia license; • The configuration is the same for all institutions (pesquisa.b-on.pt), except for the resources; • There are two main content packages: one for Hospital Members and other for Academics Members; • Every institution has one of these content packages; • We manage access to these resources at a central level in the consortium Metalib/SFX; • We only provide electronic content. We don’t have catalogs or repositories.

  5. B-on’s service today • Based on b-on’s 2009/2010 study about new discovery services we decide to adopt Primo + Primo Central Index (hosted by Ex Libris) • The implementation starts in January, 2011… • … and still going on…

  6. New Architecture

  7. First impressions • Good • The interface is simple and user friendly; • Searching in Primo central is fast; • Complete facets for refine results • Suggested new searches option • Good integration with SFX • E-shelf options • Primo central as a QuickSet in Metalib (already set)

  8. First impressions • Not so good • Primo Central contents coverage • Authentication (is not working) • How to lead with different needs in terms of member access to holdings (academic members x hospital members)? • IP Institutions identification -> same primo with different holdings? • Use search scopes? • Use of tabs? We are waiting for EL clarification.

  9. Main issues • Poor management interface; • Lots of tickets open in Ex Libris support • 2 – 4 weeks response time

  10. Main issues • Lots of work related with portuguese version and translation

  11. Main issues • Problems with integration between Primo and Metalib (access to ML QuickSets)

  12. Main issues • Searches in ML QS returns “No full-text” reference

  13. Next steps • Portuguese version • Error corrections • Usability tests • Authentication and access to holdings

  14. Thank you
