  2. 日期rìqī -Date • 农历八月十五 nónglìbāyuèshíwǔ (on the fifteen day of the eighth lunar month) • The time of the full moon. • This year it was on September 19thof the solar calendar.

  3. Legend: One Story, Many Versions

  4. 1) 后羿射日hòuyìshèrì The 3-legged birds symbolize the Jade Emperor’s sons. Hou Yi was an archer who shot them to save the earth. He was sent to earth and made mortal as punishment. There he married beautiful Chang’e.

  5. 2) 长生不老药 chángshēngbùlǎoyào Hou Yi wanted to become immortal again. In a garden hidden by clouds, Xi Wang Mu’s peaches of immortality grow on a huge tree, ripening once every 3000 years. Hou Yi got immortal medicine (made by the Jade Rabbit) from her, half for him and half for Chang’e.

  6. 3) 嫦娥与后羿分离cháng’éyǔhòuyìfēnlí Chang’e ate all of the medicine and flew to the moon. Chang’e became the beautiful and lonely goddess of the palace of the moon. She is still there. Hou Yi died on earth. His spirit went to live in the sun.
