What is the Blitzkrieg • Comes from the word lightning in the German language and relates to the lightning fast movements of Hitler’s armies and machinery.
Roots of German Military Tactics • Originally the British armies used tanks to overrun the German machine guns in the battlefield, but they could not build enough tanks fast enough, and so the Germans took this idea into their new military stradegies.
The Blitz • During WW2 the Germans launched an aerial attack on Great Britain that lasted a little over 57 consecutive days.
The Results of Destruction • At the end of the bombings the British people were in a constant state of terror with the thought that they were going to be hit next. • Also there were over 40,000 deaths and over 30,000 wounded civilians. • As well as over one million people homeless due to the destruction of their homes.
England’s Defense • To protect themselves from the raids, civillians hid in subway tunnels, schools, hospitals, basically any thing big enough or hidden enough that could take a hit. • The government didn’t do much to help its people so it was left to local authorities help keep order in the apocalyptic England.
