  2. What parts of the Blumine program are relevant to the wider world?

Biodiversity & Sustainability * Blumine Island is an example of a strong ecosystem working through biodiversity, the variation of plant and wildlife. * Biodiversity NATURALLY sustains itself! * Blumine is a model for the future because it has a sustainable water supply – something which much of the world does not.

  4. * The island is rich with resources (fresh water, seeds etc) which helps sustain the healthy plant and wildlife. The wider world is already full of social diversity, what it needs is to begin to think about and initiate biodiversity to celebrate all plant and animal species and work towards a sustainable future.

  5. Saying ‘No’ to Exclusive Education To work towards a sustainable future in the wider world, we need to adapt the physical environment (e.g. Blumine Island) to allow all access to the practical side of environmental education. We found that being on Blumine Island we learned more than we ever have in a classroom by fully involving ourselves in the conservation work – something which all should be able to do easily.

  7. * Locating and testing water – some of us tramped around the island to discover its main fresh water sources, giving us a better idea of the availability of water to any species to be introduced in the future (e.g. the Okarito kiwi). * Fixing tracking tunnels – walked around the island placing tracking tunnels with ink pads in order to maintain an awareness of any possible threats to native wildlife, as well as weta movement. * Maintaining and clearing tracks – walked tracks clearing paths and making sure they’re clearly marked. … as well as bird watching and checking snail plots.

  8. Using what we have gained from the Blumine experience to influence others…

  9. In Schools and Townships, to Councils and Governments * Each of us will return to our schools and give presentations on everything we have learned. In our enviro groups at school we will be more able to use and promote the ideas on biodiversity and sustainability we have gained. * Some of our townships also have fully-established enviro groups – the perfect outlets for our new knowledge. * Writing to the government or our local councils may seem like an extreme form of action, but it is yet another way to share our knowledge and experiences – every little bit counts! Our aim is to spread word of Blumine Island, all we have achieved here and all we hope for the future of our own communities.
